I am not the world's most confident driver, and prefer to avoid driving whenever possible. I probably wouldn't use a second car much.

But at times like this, it sure would make things easier.

I have to go to the doctor's. Today. I called thinking they'd schedule me for tomorrow or the next day instead of two weeks from now but the doctor wants me in TODAY. They wanted me in at 11, but I couldn't do that since I was calling at 10 and trying to find a ride for me and my two kids.

I scheduled for 1:30 but it's a huge hassle to deal with getting a ride and all.

I wish I could have just popped the kids in the car, driven them to my aunt's, and then gone at 11.

Ah, well.

I just sank $4000 into my car over the last 2 months, I still have another $1000 that I need to find in order to finish repairing it and doing body work on it. I gave up health insurance so I could get my car running again. I am still not paying for my auto insurance (thank God my parents are understanding). The idea of having a 2nd car with its own insurance and its own problems scares the hell out of me.

But I can completely empathise with wanting a 2nd car. Its pretty tough sometimes getting me and my wife to and from work, and me to and from school, all with one car and no reliable public transportaion option.

Sometimes I wish I lived in Hong Kong.

I'm looking for my 3rd. But then, my 2nd doesn't run right now, and is not insured. So I guess it doesn't really count. This is what I want for my next car.

Current baby.

My '93 Corolla
Hubby's Wheelchair Van

I do almost all of my running around in my '93 Toyota, and save the wheelchair van for when I need to go somewhere with my husband along. Wheelchair vans are very expensive to replace, so we figure that we are doing good to conserve it and keep it for as long as we can, and use the cheap car for most everything else.

My husband can't drive, so we have two cars for a family with only one driver, which does seem kind of decadent to me. I haven't come up with a better solution, though.

So far we've been able to avoid getting a second car. I'm glad.

I don't think that would be suitable for a large family.

I've been wondering if it is irresponsible for us to just have a minivan. I wouldn't mind having a smaller, more efficient car, but I don't want to spend the money to buy nor insure one.

Maybe I should buy an electric car.

I don't see that as decadent, Tante.

An for real, having a second car can be quite over rated. Can, not that it is. I have the old Chevy Truck because I love to work on old cars. I want a new vehicle because I need something that gets better mileage. Then I plan on leaving my truck at my parent's place so I can fly home instead of driving all the time. Now if I can just afford a new car.

Now, my friend....she's wants this. It's a Lexus RX Hybrid (SUV). Heh, she's just out of high school, and going to college soon. I guess it's good as paid for though.

My son and his wife gave up the second car for two bicycles and a baby trailer. (The trailer will accomodate two kids safely.) That would work in many urban locations and some rural ones. But, probably not in your part of CA. My "other car" has been a bicycle for 20 years now.

Well, it was about the IUD, which was put in 2 weeks ago.

I'm hoping it's ovulation pain. Which is what he said he thinks it is. But I had to get blood drawn to rule out infection and ectopic pregnancy.

mph, last I heard Toyota was planning on releasing a hybrid Sienna...

I hate ovulation pain. [Frown] I've been hospitalized and heavily medicated for that. As I think about it, that's the only confirmed ovulation I've ever had... Hmm... [Razz]

The hybrid Sienna rumor has been going around for years. Toyota denies any plans to bring a hybrid minivan to the U.S. in the near future and since Sienna is already the top selling minivan they really have no motivation to compete with themselves by introducing a hybrid model. [Frown]

I know that Xnera uses something called a Flexcar when she needs temporary transport. I don't know how exactly it works, if it's just a Chicago thing, whatever, but maybe you could look into something like this in your area?

Goody, there are Flexcars in L.A., but there's not a place remotely close enough to be any use to me unless I have advance notice. It's a good idea, though. [Smile]
