quote:
For five hundred years she's been the source of endless real and fictional mysteries, from the magic of her eyes – always seeming to follow the viewer – the enigma of her smile, to author Dan Brown's blockbuster The da Vinci Code. Now, using a sophisticated 3D colour laser scanning system, NRC scientists helped reveal the secrets behind the most famous painting in the world.
Some of the results of the scans are here

The difference between the original and current colour is pretty amazing. I'm so used to seeing the sepia tones, the blue background looks odd - but I like it.

All that work, and they don't put up a side-by-side viewing mechanism (not even in the flash player).

Very interesting, though.

The most significant revelation is that she is wearing a gauze veil on her dress which indicates that she was a recent, or soon to be, mother. Thus the smile.

That's a very cool link.

The original color version is the first version that I have actually liked. I've never really thought the Mona Lisa was all that great - it's monochromatic! I love that it was apparently not supposed to be. I like the blue backgroud and the warm figure in the foreground very much.
