So ya after watching Akagi I decided to learn how to play Mahjong and went to my local chinese club (college campus club) to learn and play.

They teach me the rules and I grasp 90% of the rules on my first game and even if were playing open handed.

(is when you play with your hand exposed so that everyone can see each others hand veyr good for tutoring)

I also didnt fully grasp the difference between a dirty hand and a clean hand.

However I quickl grasp what I need to do ai on tiles I need t complee a set of 3's.

Whats funny is that I win this first game despite the fact that one of our players was actually using open hand to his advantage as in not discardng tiles he knows I need to win.

an hour later I come back to play a second game ith different people.

I'm slightly slow so I missed my chances n getting tiles I couldve used (very fast paced people) and accidetnily keep reaching even when its not my turn or dont reach when it is my turn.

NOw back to the difference between a 'dirty' hand and a 'clean' hand a clean hand is a hand that is allof one suit.

In Mahjong 2 xample suits are the Coin tiles going from 1-9 and the bamboo tiles going from 1-9 and the Man Zi tiles also going from 1-9 and there are 4 tiles of each number in mahjong.

A clean hand is say getting 4 trios of {1,2,3} {4,5,6} {7,8,9} and say {2,3,5} all of coin or man zi or bambo tiles.

A dirty hand is having a mix of coins andor bambo andor manzi tiles (man zi being the character tiles representing 1000's i think)

I won th first game clean of all coins.

I won the second game to the displeasue of my hosts with a dirty hand which is aginst house rules.

While it isnt strictly aginst the rules they nonetheless agree not to play dirty but since im new it doesnt mattr.

To win you need 4 "pairs" aka trios. {3}{3}{3}{3} and a pair of 2 tiles. Say 2 "2s".

I won through a combination of bamboo tiles and coin tiles.

Beginner's luck neh? The second game as closed hand, the girl in the room even asked "was this your first game!?"

[Big Grin]

I am Pro. [Wink]

I can even pick up a row of 18 tiles and place them ontop of each other for building the rows.

I have found my calling [Cool]

Let the braggging begin!

I really wish I understood how to play mah jong. Unfortunately when people write out explanations for the rules they just dont register well with me, I am pretty visual in that regard.

1: I love Mah Jong, and it's cool being one of relatively few white folks out there that has learned it.

2: it's always bugged me that most people around here hear the words and think of the computerized tai pei games (matching the stacks of tiles to get rid of them... bleh)

3: much as I love the game, it's annoying because there are so many different rules sets and like 10 times as many scoring methods (depending on country/region etc...)

i.e. this is the first I've heard of clean/dirty hands being any kind of requirements (I've heard of bonuses for winning with what you've described as a clean hand) but i've also seen rule sets where you can get wierd combinations of 1s and 9s rather than just traditional sets.

4: the best part is yelling out "pong!" when it's appropriate. not only do you get to jump in out-of-turn but you get to say a really fun word.

hell ya, and if I win enough times I think Ill work up the courage to gamble with it ^-^

Pong!

Clean/Dirty hand was simply a house rule where for reasons unbegnoskt to me yet they dont like playing to win with a dirty hand apparently one of the memebrs will be very pissed off at me or something so Im encouraged to play without dirty hands.

They also admit to bairly knowing the rules they simply play as whoever gets 4 Pong whether in your closed hand or in the left side corner and 1 pair first.
