...not Geico. In fact, I've been with Geico for years. I wasn't paying awful prices but I thought I'd try Met Life today (I get a discount through my work) and I'm going to be paying about $140 less for a 6 month policy with more coverage than I had with the Geico policy.

That gecko (troglodyte, whatever) is getting really annoying. I should do some shopping myself--I keep thinking the same thing whenever I see those TV ads.

Little tip from an insurance agent. Shop around every 5 years. Many insurance companies give HUGE discounts for being with the same prior company for 5 or more years, especially if you have high liability limits. It is mostly because they assume someone loyal enough to stay around 5 years might stay that long with them to. If you are getting a new company every 6-12 months you are doing yourself a disservice in the long run.

I DID save a bunch when I switched to Geico. (took me awhile to also realize that GEICO stands for "Government Employees Insurance Company", even though it apparently is open to everyone, not just government employees).
But I've been with them more than five years, and I have had no claims at all -- maybe I should begin shopping around for new deals..

Some companies give a discount to their own long term clients. When my kids left the barn and had to buy their own insurance, they saved big dollars by "transitioning" to a new policy from the old one they were covered on. (mine) They now have policys that are older than they are. I haden't switched, mostly out of loyality. Allstate was the only real company that would sell car insurance to a 23 year old enlisted man back in the day when I was a 23 year old enlisted man. So I stayed with them. Now my kids are rewarded. EDIT Back then GEICO wouldn't even return your call to tell you No! unless you were an E-6. So much for Government employee.

Hmm. I'll have to let my parents know that - as far as I know, they've never changed companies. But I think the one we have now is connected to my dad's AARP membership, so I'd imagine that probably limits their choices.
Edit: Yep, Hartford's the only car insurance company listed with them. Still, I'm filing that away for future reference!

Allstate, in some states, actually gives an additional 5% discount to people switching from Geico, State Farm, and Erie. Its a permanant discount to, not a bait and switch thing.

AARP doesn't require they have insurance with them. My parents have AARP, and are with Erie insurance. Hartford does have good rates from what I have seen though. Apparantly not in my parent's case though.

1. The subject of this thread really should have been "I just saved...by switching from Geico." 2. Erie is a good company, but the only way to pay by credit card is over the phone, and you have to pay a $4.95 fee.

My father had Erie, but they don't sell in South Carolina so I had to switch. Too bad too, they had good rates.
