I bought chicken today, and the dates are good. I took it out and started cutting, though, and I thought it smelled a bit funny.

I know, I'm going to get a chorus of "take it back to the store"s, but I'm not always sure of my judgement. Maybe I just never noticed what raw chicken breast smells like before.

Any advice?

If the date is good, I say just cook it all the way through.

Is the consistency/texture normal? Is the smell strong or mild?

It's not too strong, and to my eye it looks just like it should.

It's raining, I'm tired, and I don't want to have to walk back to the store. I think I'll give it a try.

Spoiled chicken stinks like rotten eggs. Slightly rotten chicken stinks slightly less. Just bring it back if you're not sure. In my experience, the customer service folk are more than glad to take your word on "This meat smells rotten" rather than stick their own noses in your rotten, decaying flesh.

Me and Niki had chicken the other night which smelled a little bit like spoiled milk. Pretty unpleasant smelling. Niki could barely smell it, but I could smell it pretty strongly (which is odd, because normally she has the superior sense of smell).

It was also somewhat discolored, sort of brownish on the edges, as opposed to pinkish like our chicken usually is.

We tossed it, which was pretty painful to do.

*sigh* Thanks, Tante. That's what I'm smelling.

Alright, rapid-fire change of plans. Back to the store I go.

Yeah, when in doubt, toss it out.

The Tyson brand wingettes that I buy occassionally are almost always spoiled if they are thawed, even if the date says they're good. I've taken to only buying them if they're still slightly frozen and then thawing them myself. Just saying you can't always trust the date. When it doubt, the nose knows.

Took 'em back. Since I couldn't bring myself to buy a different pack, and that was supposed to be my dinner, I went and got spanakopita and dolmades instead. And turkish delight.

I feel better.

And I learned something new today!

Sounds like an upgrade. Love the spanikopita and dolmades!
