My computer, an ancient windows 98, loads normally up to the point where the desktop opens. At that point, annoyingly enough, I get the message: "It is now safe to shut down the computer." I'm at a loss here; any thoughts?

Have it had any viruses lately, or have you installed anything new? It sounds like a wininit.exe problem -- sometimes happens if that file gets messed with. Do you still have your old install disc?

I think JTK's suggestion is a good idea. But you do need to make sure you can boot into safe mode or dos, otherwise it's not really going to matter.
