I had an English teacher once who told us that before we turn a paper in, we should have a smart friend edit it (so that they can catch all of the grammar-type problems) and have a stupid friend read it, because our papers should be so clear that even our stupid friend could follow it.
I guess Terry Gilliam doesn't have any stupid friends.

My best friend was just talking about Terry Gilliam movies in general. I love Monty Python, I really don't get Baron von Munchhausen, and I didn't really like Brothers Grimm.

Basically my best friend chalked it up to Gilliam being ahead of his time, and that someday people will get it and appreciate it.

I don't know if I agree, but to each his own.

Holy crap! Gilliam did Montry Python? I really feel like I should have known this. Shame on me.

I didn't expect much out of Baron von, but it was a fun movie. Strange, but fun. And he did Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, One of my favorite movies of all time.

He also did Time Bandits and 12 Monkeys, two of my favorites. Plus Brazil, which I wasn't so big on.

Time Bandits, 12 Monkeys, Brothers Grimm and Baron Von Munchhausen were all fimes I really enjoyed.

I watched Brazil, but I could not, for the life of me, get into it.

Brothers Grimm was good, I had some issues with it, but it was enjoyable.

Yeah, Juxtapose, he did the animations. He acted a tiny bit in Flying Circus, but not a lot.

Of the roles he's played, my favorite is the revoltingly lewd Roman guard (in the scene where Eric Idle is the Roman guard with a stammer) in Life of Brian.

I enjoyed Brothers Grimm. There were a couple things I would have changed, but on the whole, I really liked it.

I've never been more confused by a romance in a movie in my entire life of watching movies.

SPOILERS

so...the kiss was true love, and she woke up, but then she had to kiss matt damon and he made out with her and everyone thought it was so funny, and then they're prancing around the town and she first kisses matt damon, then almost begrudgingly, like "oh, here's one for you too" kisses heath ledger....but then heath ledger says to matt damon "i always thought you'd end up with the girl..." So was that just some incestuous girl-swapping that took place? And what about her comforting matt damon in the house earlier on, when he'd been nothing but an absolute jerk the whole time she'd known him and i just DON'T GET IT

*tears hair out*

I think the romance was exactly that--meant to burst the notion of just about every fairy tale cliché, including how a prince and a princess kiss and fall in love.

Instead, the less "princely" of the brothers is in love with the woodsman (er, woodsgirl) so his kiss is "true love." But the woodsgirl is infatuated with the more "princely" brother who, in fact, would have a one-night stand and then dump her.

Oh, how like life this triangle is...

The town is saved, and it's never really established who ends up with whom. I rather liked it like that. [Smile]

*sigh*

Girls are stupid! Who wouldn't be infatuated with Jacob? He's so smart and bookish and passionate! Will is such an obvious poo-head.

Do not try to understand love. It is confusing. Best to just acknowledge it exists and smile when it shows up for dinner.

Gilliam was the lone American member of Monty Python.

He's made some quite good movies, such as 12 Monkeys.

He also made "Jabberwocky." {gouges out own eyes with a rusty spoon.} Sorry, what was I talking about again? Oh. Right. Gilliam.

I can't believe nobody liked Brazil. That was an excellent movie. Excellent! but then, i've always been a fan of anti-eutopian books and movies.

Saw it last night. Ick. Didn't know that Gilliam could make such a bad movie. Confusing, badly edited, dull, cliched resolution of childhood issues... gah.

Gilliam also directed the Python movies, along with Terry Jones. Python divided in part becouse John Cleese and Chapman, who wrote much of the more memorable material, were moving in different directions from the "two Terrys." John Cleese was moving toward marriage and financial sucess while Chapman was moving toward alcholism, partialy spurned by being Gay in a society where homosexuality was not tolerated, and death.

Brazil was a great movie, even though it had some slow moments, anyways he's coming out with another one called Tideland. Looks like it'll be more like Brazil than anything else.
