I was just wondering, since 98 machines cannot read NTFS, can they connect to a server and utilize it's resources and write to share files if the server is formatted as NTFS?

If they're able to connect to the server, yes I think they can.
There are connection issues, though, because Windows 98 doesn't support long network names, so the WIn98 box might have difficulty even seeing the 2003 box.
But once it does, the file system is handled at the server, so I don't see why it can't. Windows 98 doesn't need to know anything about NTFS because the server handles that on its end.
