I'm finding it VERY hard not to use language that would violate rules here, to describe how incredibly angry I am.

Someone burned down my high school gym on Devil's Night

I just found out a few minutes ago from my dad and some friends. The school was in a transition, they'd closed down my high school and moved all the kids to the other high school in town, consolidating.

The school is being renovated, and the gym is though to be totally ruined. It might have to be torn down and rebuilt, in a city that almost always refuses to allocate more money for schools.

Also, all the desks, books, tables, chair, everything in the school that was being stored for renovation was in the gym. It's all gone now.

My friend who works at the police department said the arsonist (which is what they said it was), has been caught, but no other details.

I can't even begin to describe now angry I am, or how sad.

That sucks, at least they caught the person responsible.

Why do people do things like that? That's just dumb. (Also, I was seeing from the streaming headlines that 911 service in Detroit is intermittent? What?)

911 service is down for a lot of the landlines, but cell phones still work just fine for 911 calls.

I'm not sure what the cause is, but they are coming back online slowly over the night.

That's insane. How does something like that happen? Was there a natural disaster?

No.

If I had to guess, I'd say they were overloaded from Devil's Night calls and somehow were shut down.

Devil's Night and Halloween around here is probably the only time I wouldn't dare to venture into Detroit at night. The kids in Detroit are practically bussed out by their parents to trick or treat in the suburbs. We had probably two little girls tonight from the actual neighborhood, and twenty teenagers from Detroit.

I can't seem to get the link to Wikipedia to work, but look up Devil's Night, it's apparently only a Detroit area thing. I wasn't aware it was only a Detroit area thing, I thought everyone had one.

Basically kids run amok, egging houses, smashing pumpkins, setting abandoned buildings on fire, etc. Detroit has tried to oppose it by recruiting bands of volunteers to patrol the streets.

You had a space before your h, Lyr.

I still find it disturbing that the system went down. What happens when there's an earthquake or flood or something?

It's Detroit. Haven't had an earthquake in probably 80 years, and all it did was wake everyone up, and flooding only happens in the boonies.

Either way, like I said, it was just a guess about the 911 thing, I really don't know why it went down for sure.

I just saw the article on the news again. All the equipment being stored in the gym is ruined. And they found graffiti in the halls of the school.
