I guess I have them in my bedroom closet (they were there when I moved in), but I saw things in Target that said they were bases with stuff (like laundry hampers) and tops with stuff...is it like Legos for storage? How interchangable are they?

As far as I can tell, they are one of several brands of "closet systems" (a brand I had never heard of before today). Made to Measure and Closits are brands I am more familiar with.

Personally, I find all those modular systems singularly unhelpful, unless you have way more closet space than I ever have. If you already have them installed, but want to change some of the pieces, I suspect you are best off sticking with the exact brand you already have.

Consumer Reports has a report on them (but you'd have to subscribe if you wanted to see the whole article).

And here I thought a closet was just a closet.

I don't really know what brand they are....they kinda look like the same brand (which I think actually IS called California closets or something). The way that they're set up now is a little inconvenient, as it puts the closet pieces with the shelves right in front of where the doors open (my closet runs all the way along my bedroom wall, with two sets of double doors). Which is fine, except that it means that the closet hangy bar parts are largely BEHIND the wall, which makes it harder for me to hang up things that need to be hung, like dress pants.

The brand is one of several Target carries (going by their website), and it seems to be based in my home state (hence the name).

Can you just move some of the existing components around?

Well, I'm thinking about that, but I think they had a thing with a hamper on it that sits on the bottom at Target, and I think it'd be cool to have a hamper like that (I had one in the bathroom of my first apartment that pulled out of the wall, and it was sooooo convenient). But I don't know if I can just kind of throw all the pieces together, or if I should just try to find a whole new set of things...

The ones in there now hang on the closet bars. I THINK it's the Target ones, but...I'm not sure.

Edit: On closer inspection, they don't move. [Frown]

We used California Closets for my daughter's room a few years back when we remodeled it.

Mainly because that attic-type room had NO closet at all. We wanted their expert input on how to "create" a closet-like area without actually having an enclosed closet. We gave them dimensions of one wall area, and they came up with a design, and the pieces, for us to create an "open closet" with shelving and hanging room, mounted right on that wall.

Now that I've seen it done, I could probably do it myself if I ever had to again (with the similar shelving they sell at Home Depot and places). But it was good to get the guidance back when we needed it.
