I’m on the search for an inexpensive Varmint gun. ($700 or less). I would like it to be a .223 or .204. I’m thinking about getting a Varmint version of the AR-15. Has anyone shot one of these? Can you tell me your experience with it? Can you suggest a better option? Thanks for the help.

AR-15's are great rifles but you have to keep them clean.

The Ruger Mini-14 in .223 is notoriously good for being as inexpensive as it is... I'm guessing you have one of those?

Personally, I like the old Winchester (model 94, I think?)Lever Action Trapper Carbines (I've seen them in .45 long colt and 30-30-- maybe not varmint calibers, but neither are they real top of the line rifle cartridges either... though the .30-30 doubles as a deer rifle if you can get within 100 yds or so). These are just plain fun rifles to shoot.

It doesn't matter what gun you get, as long as you can shoot this stuff from it:

Season Shot

I want a new gun.

One that does what it should.

One that won't let me kill too much,

One that won't let me kill what's good.

Some of my friends built their own varmint gun. They had access to the proper tools, and worked at a place of business where this activity wouldn't raise any issues. Making note of that, here's how it worked. There is video, but due to how graphic it is, I won't link it here.

The rodent wanders into a clear plastic tube, searching for the bait. About 8-12 inches down the tube is a motion sensor. Upon tripping the sensor, the gun is activated. It's a pneumatic cannon. The rodent is propelled from a near standstill into a bucket 8 feet away. It's a powerful cannon. The bucket moves at least a foot back under the impact of the rodent's body.

Result: crushed rodent, in a bloody fashion.

The same video also shows a time lapse of a poisened rodent dying over the course of 2 days. Just for comparison sakes. [Smile]
