I think that's a pretty good object lesson for kids that age, but that's just me.

Yeah, home movies are never as much fun for the kids as the parents.

I think they should have taken him to Outback--maybe he could have gotten a free appetizer for his birthday.

Does Outback serve Kosher? Remember he was the Jewish Messiah while he was in the flesh, he probably still has the dietary discipline of a Jew...

He was not concerned about what happened to demon tainted pig eaters though... or should that be eaters of demon tainted pigs?

No, he wasn't. If he existed at all (unlikely), he was a heretic, and he probably paid as much attention to kashrut as he did to Shabbat, which is to say, not much. He most certainly was not our Messiah, pagan legends to the contrary.

And no, Outback isn't kosher, more's the pity.

Are the two of you merely speculating that he did not keep kosher, or are those just random slams on Christianity?

*sings* Go Outback tonight, life will still be there tomorrow.

I do love that motto, even though I've never "gone Outback".

You never miss an opportunity to disparage Christianity, do you?

I don't think I deserve that. I really don't. I think I'm pretty careful about what I say -- about Christianity, as about anything else.

Given that he (if he existed) clearly did not keep quite a bit of the Law, I don't know why one would assume that he kept kosher.

It seems to me that the authors of the gospels made a point of it when he didn't, so it might not be unreasonable to assume that if they didn't specifically mention him failing to keep kosher, it probably didn't happen. Certainly, there is mention of the pharisees criticizing him for failing to keep the Sabbath.

I agree that you're pretty careful about what you say. It surprised me to see you make that comment when Judaism wasn't, as far as I could tell, under attack. I just couldn't understand why you bothered. But who the hell am I to judge, eh? I'm not even Christian. It just surprised me. Sorry I jumped on you.

There is a general assumption that if one is a public Sabbath-breaker, one cannot be assumed to keep any of the laws. Regardless, while I am aware that many Christians believe that he did keep (much of? most of? some of?) Jewish law, you will find that assumption is not shared by the Pharisees' descendants.

Even so, I probably would not have posted a response if someone else has posted what I reacted to. Or if it had not been phrased as it was.

And I know it never would be. [Smile] I have never known you to be less than respectful of Christians or their religion. And I appreciate it because I am aware that some of them are less than respectful of you and your religion.

Considering what a big deal kosher laws were later on in the Christian Church, many years after the death of Jesus, I'd assume he did keep kosher, if I had to make a guess.

I really like the idea behind this exercise. I think it's something more Christian youth groups should do.

It's like a football game. It's like rivka and Lisa are being called for encroachment, but upon review it's found that there was a false start by General Sax, drawing the other two off-side. However, while rivka stops there, Lisa instead keeps going and gets an unnecessary roughness call.

While the analogy is far from perfect, I'm nonetheless going to declare offsetting (though not equivalent) penalties this time, and ask that if folks wish to continue the thread it return to the original topic. Please.
