This thread is partly inspired by the gift I received from Shan (a wall calendar of political posters).

Seen any doozies lately?

Post them here! (please)

Not lately. But my favorite political poster of all time was very simple and was produced during the time that Richard Nixon was president. Someone took his campaign slogan, "Nixon's the one", and turned it around on him by putting at underneath a photo of an apparently twenty-something pregnant woman.

Well, this one was a favorite of mine as a teenager.

::Explanation for all the youngsters: The poster is titled "Uneasy Riders" and is a shot of President Richard Nixon and VP Spiro Agnew on the same bikes and wearing the same clothes as Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, parodying one of the closing scenes in the movie "Easy Rider."

In this scene, Nixon is the one saying "we blew it" against a background of smoking urban ruins.::

(Will retire back to my dotage and ruminations)

The anti-anti-terror (what do you call that position?) posters made me wonder at just how different the worlds we live in are. There were several about how Americans aren't supposed to talk about the war in Iraq. But we do it all the time. How can someone be a part of cyberspace, or for that matter follow other types of media, and not know this -- especially if he's doing it himself? Wow.

I usually dislike political cartoons for this very reason: ridicule replaces reason. But "Nixon's the One"! was still hilarious.

Not so! Many's the time when a cartoon made me think about the subject in question. Humour, in all its forms, allows you to view topics from a different angle. There's no coercion to agree, so even if one disagrees with the comic's point of view, his statements might help you to understand where he/she is coming from.

Austin Cline has a big series of anti-Christian Right/Christian Nationalist posters, mostly based on WWI and WWII Allied and Axis propoganda posters.

Some may be offended, but Cline does a good job of skewering the unspoken underpinnings of Christian Nationalists, like dissent=treason because leaders are chosen by God.

Dissent=treason is meme that has been used far too regularly since 9/11. [Frown]
