No, I'm not going to link to it. I just saw it in the theaters.

Now, I read the Nancy Drew books when I was a kid. It was interesting comparing the ones written for my generation with the ones my parents read...1980s Nancy felt "tingly" around Ned, for one thing. 1950s-60s Nancy occasionally smiled at Ned. *ahem*

I was surprised to find out a new movie's been made. I was even more surprised to find out the movie is re-using the "Brady Bunch" movie gimmick...see, Nancy acts like she's stuck in the 1950s-60s, and doesn't realize how unhip and utterly lame she is compared to the "cool" modern kids!

Oh, our sides, they do split!

*vacant stare*

Anyway, I would suggest any parents with visually-oriented kids who like Nancy Drew might instead check out the recent series of Nancy Drew graphic novels. They're published by PaperCutz, they have fun, up-to-date, well-drawn mysteries.

Well, it can't possibly be worse than the "Nancy Drew" movie I saw on Disney once, with her at college just aching to be a sorority girl, and drugs, ODs, and innuendo.

Can it? [Angst]

It can.

I saw this trailer too. I almost ran screaming out of the movie theatre. It's Nancy Drew meets Clueless.

WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO MY CHILDHOOD!?

Hey, *I* liked the first Brady Bunch movie. It made fun of how clueless and retro the Brady clan was... but also showed that they were sweeter and nicer than all the hip, cynical '90s people they met.

It doesn't even make sense. Every two decades or so, the Nancy Drew character is significantly updated.

The current version drives a hybrid car and reads manga, for example. [Wink]

The 1930s-40s Nancy differed from the 50s-60s version. And so on.

Plus, I have a problem with the notion that an extremely intelligent, compassionate, wholesome teen sleuth is worthy only of ridicule on the big screen. How dare girls have a fictional role model -not- fixated on fashion or a "scene". [Roll Eyes]

Where did I say I didn't? I said the upcoming Nancy Drew film ripped off its gimmick...and it's a gimmick that makes no sense for this particular fictional character.

Unlike a rerun sitcom family, she -has- changed with the times.

Ah, sorry, I perceived your unhappinesa with the ND movie as extending to the BB movies as well.

Her hair is neither blonde nor red, nor strawberry blonde nor even reddish brown! [Embarrassed]

Me, too. I didn't want to watch it. But I was like a deer in the headlights-- I flipped onto it and couldn't turn away. This is it, btw.

And having watched this trailer, I think that one may have been worse. Although this Nancy is far too young.

I seem to remember some ND books from maybe the 90s where she had black hair. I just couldn't read those, I had to go back to the ones with the yellow covers.
