Fahim and I currently have 8 domains hosted at the place where he worked up until a few days ago. But, what with no longer being employed by them and no longer receiving free VPS hosting, we're looking for a new host.

We don't want add-on domain hosting, ie having domain www.xyz.com pointing to a subdomain of www.abc.com. We want true multiple domain hosting.

In the past, we used a reseller account, and we're looking at doing that again. In our experience, it's been the most economical way of doing things.

What we need:

linux servers
mySQL 4/5
Ruby on Rails
php 4/5
apache
perl
WHM/cPanel (preferred - not absolutely necessary)

Do you have anyone you can recommend?

I have a friend who does do hosting, but not for free. If interested I will check with him on your requirements. If he can handle them I'll pass on his contact information to you.

Thanks, Dan. Is he running a webhosting company, or is it more of a hobby or side thingie?

We're not looking for free, but we are looking for cheap, considering Fahim's unemployment. [Smile]

dkw, thanks, but they host single domains only from what I can tell, so we would have to order x8 of them. That's more expensive than a reseller account or VPS where we can host as many domains as we want. Thanks anyway, though. [Smile]

ETA: We used Dathorn before we switched over to the VPS at Fahim's job. It provides 4 GB disk space, 60 GB bandwidth, unlimited domains & subdomains, and unlimited MySQL Databases for $13.50 a month. We're considering going back to them, but then Fahim started using Ruby on Rails and would like a VPS for more control over his development stuff.

So either we need a better price for a reseller account, or a comparable enough price on a VPS to justify the cost. [Smile]

Dreamhost, as near as we can tell, do add-on domains, not true multiple domain hosting. It's that whole xyz.com points to xyz.abc.com or abc.com/xyz rather than resolving to xyz.com.

Have we misunderstood? If they offer true multiple domain hosting, then we'd definitely consider them. Their prices certainly look reasonable enough.

Quid, my friend is a part time programmer who does hosting among other services full time. Unfortunately I don't have his email here to pass on your requirements to him. I will do so this evening.

quid, unless I'm mistaken, I've got a few domains fully hosted with my dreamhost account (I also have subdomains for some of those, but that was my choice because I'm an idiot when it comes to developing) and none of them resolve to a subdomain unless I'd chosen for it to. I mean, a few are www.hotnathan.com, www.madowl.com, www.mistakenexperience.com... none are subdomains.

Dan, thanks for offering your friend's services. It's no longer necessary. We had to move quickly since we had no idea how long Fahim's previous employer would keep our domains running on their servers and we couldn't count on them.

Fugu, thanks. We checked them out. They looked pretty decent.

mack, thanks for the clarification. We weren't sure, given that we ran across one host yesterday that claimed they did multiple websites, but it really meant the whole subdomain thingie that just doesn't work for us. So, you know, that just kinda wrecked us for everyone else. [Razz]

Subdomains aren't a sign of being an idiot when it comes to development - there are perfectly valid reasons for having subdomains. I have, um, a whole bunch. They serve a very useful purpose. [Smile]

I was incorrect in how I explained the add-on domains, evidently. [Smile] Apparently, all the data is stored under subdomains, ie xyz.abc.com, but resolves at xyz.com. We didn't want that because it would mean me messing around in Fahim's stuff, and given his very very OCD nature, it would be messy. [Big Grin] I might end up chopped into bits and in the freezer after all. [Razz]

Sorry about the confusion.

***

We ended up going with slhost.com. They have a pretty decent VPS hosting package with a 50% discount right now - the discounted price being good for either 2 years or forever, I don't remember which. It gives Fahim everything he wants for his development stuff, so that's all good.

It ended up being a little more than we wanted to pay ($22.50 a month), but I have to concede that the development end of things could be important - they've already given him one possible job contact who's interested in Fahim's Ruby on Rails project as an example of what Fahim can potentially do for a project this guy has in mind. That was actually the tipping point for us to go with a VPS over an ordinary reseller account.

We signed up this morning with them and Fahim's busy transferring everything over from the old server to the new. [Smile] Yay. Okay, all transferred now.

Next, he's planning on installing Ruby on Rails so he can get his development stuff going. [Smile]

Thanks, everyone! [Smile]

quid: I think what you're referring to are virtual domains, where there's a central server with one or a few IPs that redirects people to the appropriate site based on the domain in their request. That can make even spacious hosting packages feel cramped, and removes a ton of control.

fugu, are you talking about what we went with or how I miscommunicated add-on domains? I'm confused by your comment.
