So, I've started playing free online poker; Maverick and Casino Royale and a bunch of other movies got me interested in learning how to play the game, so I found a website that lets you play for free (I chose Poker Stars) and got to playing.
Well, my step-dad noticed my interest, and I told him I was just playing with play money. Well, he said that I couldn't gamble online anyway, since its illegal in America.
But I looked around and I saw some American players playing for real money, so..
Is it illegal or not? He speculated maybe you just couldn't host a site, or maybe those people hadn't been caught, but...

Online gambling was made illegal a few months ago, though I don't know the specifics of what has actually been made illegal about it. Partypoker stopped taking real money deposits from american players, as well as many other poker sites.
That being said, myself and friends of mine have been playing for REAL money during most of this time anyway. depositing through american bank accounts and getting our money deposited right back into our american bank accounts. I use pokerstars. a friend of mine has used poker stars, ultimate bet, and full tilt.
if you've become interested in poker movies, check out Rounders. It's my favorite poker/gambling movie. and I've seen a lot.
*note - i'm not advocating you start playing for real money. just relating my experience. I really don't know if I can get in any sort of trouble for playing on these sites. Or if I can possibly lose my deposit for some reason(which is why i've been keeping a relatively low amount in my account and withrdawing funds when I do well).

That's a little disappointing. I was kind of thinking that maybe if I started doing well enough I would put maybe $10 or so in and play for quarters for a little bit.
Oh well. *shrugs*
I'll check out that movie, BTW. Thanks for that.
