I like Broadway. I have been there a few times, and I love music, so musicals are my favorite.

(Yes, it is possible to be straight AND like Broadway)

I have been working through my wifes collection of Broadway musicals, and I have found a few performances that have really blown me away.

Some of these have been surprises....people who don't have a reputation for live performances, either because they have not done them before, or because they are not famous, at least in the US, for that genre.

I loved The Man of La Mancha, played by Brian Stokes Mitchell. But he was not a surprise....he was great, but his performance was predicted to be great...and it was.

But Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is stunning. I have seen her in many movies, from The Color of Money on, but I had no idea of her vocal talents. Her version of the song Aldonza is painful to listen to, not because of her voice, but because of the emotion she conveys. It is suppose to be painful, and it is incredible. He voice is pleasant, but she has a talent for conveying emotion and sincerity that is beyond rare.

I recall OSC review this play, and he was blown away as well. He was spot on, and I am sorry it took me this long to discover this version.
