And does anyone have either

1. A verifiable link proving its truth

OR

2. A verifiable link proving it's false?

The Story (which is now circulating in classrooms)

Person overheard criticizing President Bush's policies while dining in McDonald's arrested by FBI.

*sigh*

*edited for clarity*

Ridiculous. Why would anybody criticize President Bush being arrested?
Besides, MacDonalds is Clinton's hangout, not Dubya's.

Dunno. It's a story that keeps popping up and circulating. *scowl*

Haven't seen hide nor hair of it myself.

Certainly, a lot of bad things happen in this country without making the news -- especially the major news sources, which are all abysmal at reporting real news. Nevertheless, I have to dismiss this as urban myth because there is no mention of it anywhere. I'm not sure where you heard it, but I would say that the next time someone mentions it to you tell them to give you a credible source or shut up about it.

I'm going to join in on the crowd calling this bogus. For one thing, I have yet to hear of it, which seems unlikely for something of this magnitude. Furthermore, there are so many people openly criticizing Bush right now, that it would make absolutely no sense for some random person to be arrested at a fast food restaurant.

Maybe the FBI agents that arrested them had a personal reason for doing it. Maybe, just maybe, they are abusing their power and using "criticizing Bush" as an excuse to make someone's life miserable.

I doubt it, one would expect them to be able to come up with a far better excuse than that.

The FBI arresting someone in MacDonalds would make a national headline in-and-of-itself, even without any mention of Dubya or other similar factor.

Mos Def got arrested for performing a song outside of the VMAs last year that had a few anti-bush themes in it, so I'm not surprised.

ricree101, I think you are over-estimating the competence of the FBI. Maybe they could make up a better excuse, but "criticizing Bush's policy" seems like it might have really happened, and so they would have had some eye-witnesses that aren't related to the FBI to back them up.

Plus, if you are arresting someone just to piss them off, it's probably better that you pick something minor to charge them with.

Imagine if the FBI agents had went through the effort to prove that these people in the McDonald's are Chinese spies that should be charged with treason. It's a better excuse, yes, but one that would attract far more attention than they want.

I know it's bunk, I just want a darn Snopes story saying so, so I can hand it out.

For wahtever reason, this story has been quietly making the rounds in this area.

I ignored it at the adult level, but when it starts coming home from the kid's classmates and he asks . . .

Anyway, Snopes doesn't appear to have touched it, or maybe I'm not searching properly.

I just wanna link!!!

*giggling at aspectres link*

Indeed. I can see the headlines:

Big Brother in McD's
Wiretaps brought government into our homes, but now they've crossed the line, writes domestic affairs correspondent George Frost.

Frankly, it would not surprise me if this had happened and failed to make the news. (Which isn't to say that it DID happen). My family used to visit Maine every summer, and in Kennebunkport (which is where the senior Bushes summer), there's loads of stories like this.

Notably: One guy unknowingly parked his car a mile from where Bush Sr was golfing, and Bush's security people broke into his car and completely ransacked it and didn't make any restitution to him for damage, and they brought him in for questioning. Which is so silly it explodes my brain.

As well, I remember those three women (this did make the news) who got thrown out of one of George Bush's rallies during the run-up to the 04 election because they was wearing a shirt that said Protect Our Civil Liberties. And they had tickets. And they were told if they didn't leave quietly they'd be arrested for disorderly conduct.

Bah.

Very spurious logic there. U2 was arrested in LA for singing songs that had no anti-U.S.-President themes for pretty much the same thing.

Mos Def would have been escorted away by Police if he was singing "Baby got Back." It had nothing to do with anti-Bush themes.

I always knew that McDonald's Waypoint internet service was a government consipiracy to undermine the public's personal privacy.
