I got media credentials to take pics at the Big East tournament for WVU next week. I’m trying to find a place to stay and wasn’t sure about hotels near NYC. The media hotel is right there at the Garden and is like $200 a night. Ouch. I’m hoping to find something maybe a little bit out further. I was half thinking it would be best to stay somewhere that had close access to a subway. Anyone have any experiences or suggestions? Thanks!

You could just bring a sleeping bag and have a relaxing evening under the stars in Central Park.

Might not be good on the camera. Plus I need to have a place to plug stuff in. Gotta transfer pics and what not.

Yeah.... hotels.com doesn't really have a stay here for easy access to NYC button. I figured someone might have stayed just outside the city for a decent price. Maybe rode the train in from NJ or something....

There are plenty of hotels in Manhattan that have some bargain rates. You should actually look into whether there's a special at, say, the Waldorf Astoria. Their "normal" rate starts at around $280, but I know people who have gotten in there at less than 1/2 of that. It can't hurt to at least contact them.
A typical mid-town (theater district) hotel that sometimes has good rates is the Milford Plaza (I checked and they have rates at about $150/night).
It just depends on how low occupancy has been and whether there's anything really big going on. I suppose a basketball tournament would qualify as "really big," though, so you may be out of luck in terms of hotels in Manhattan.
If that's the case, I suggest looking towards Queens and getting a hotel on the subway line.
I hate to be the voice of caution, but if you're carrying expensive camera equipment around, I would suggest taking cabs to/from the event even though it's more money. You don't want to be in the subway or walking for blocks on end carrying stuff like that.
Have a great time!
