This completely blew my mind last night, and so I thought I would post it here. I have a feeling there are very few pro wrestling fans on these boards...but if there are they will recognize the shock I felt when I heard this news.

Wrestler Chris Benoit's death part of a double murder-suicide.

quote:
At 10 p.m. Monday night, Lt. Pope held a press conference in conjunction with Scott Ballard, the district attorney for Fayette County. The press conference officially ruled authorities’ findings as a double murder-suicide from within the home.

WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

I can only hope that they are wrong, and somehow this is just a horrible accident. I'm sure we'll find out in a few days.

I heard about that today. I'm not a fan myself, but some of my friends are going to be crushed.

Link doesn't work for me. I have no idea who this fellow is, but it's still horrible.

What's horrible is that there's a dobie on this thread. Seriously. This is an actual dead family.

I met Chris Benoit a few times and I am very stunned by this news. He was very nice, and talked with a few of us for almost an hour one time about wrestling and life in general. He was very passionate about wrestling and his family. Yahoo link
I didn't know him personally but he seemed so full of life, and he will definitely be missed.

Updated the link to an AP article.

I've watched Benoit wrestle for years. Again, I just hope that somehow it turns out he's not responsible for this.

Link with better details

ATLANTA (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press Tuesday.

Oh man I was really really hoping for a terrible accident, something along the lines of a gas leak. It's been a long time since I paid any attention to wrestling, CB was part of the Four Horsemen at the time, as I recall, and he was one of my favorites along with the Harts.

Oh, wow. I heard about this last night, but all they had was reports of the deaths.

When Brett Hart's brother Owen died, Brett's return to the ring afterwards was a 45-minute tribute match (in the same ring his brother died in) with Benoit that was almost technical perfection. You could tell that it was emotionally cathartic for Brett and that both he and Benoit were honoring Owen just as a singer would honor someone with a song. Benoit and the Harts trained together and were good friends.

I've never heard any allegations of drug use or wild behavior about Benoit, unlike many other wrestlers. He was a true master of his craft and, from all accounts, a good friend and loving family man. I can't imagine what led to this - obviously there was something terrible happening that we didn't know about, but I pray for him and his family.

I'm going to turn nitpicky for a second, just to get my mind off the deaths.

It actually wasn't the same ring. Bret Hart and Benoit were working for WCW at the time, and Owen was with the WWF.

But yeah, I saw that match and agree with you.

My husband is a wrestling fan, and he'd tivo'ed Raw last night. Turns out it was a 3-hour tribute to him.

And now I'm upset because, if these reports coming in are true, every time I see one of his matches it's going to be tainted.

Sorry to bring this back up, but interesting news... Apparently, Wikipedia reported the wife's death fourteen hours before the cops showed up.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19468182/

quote:
A Wikipedia official, Cary Bass, said Thursday that the entry was made by someone using an Internet protocol address registered in Stamford, Conn., where World Wrestling Entertainment is based.

.../...

Benoit’s page on Wikipedia, a reference site that allows users to add and edit information, was updated at 12:01 a.m. Monday, about 14 hours before authorities say the bodies were found. The reason he missed a match Saturday night was "stemming from the death of his wife Nancy," it said.

Oh wow. That's a little creepy.

My fiancee actually saw Benoit quite often at the drugstore where she worked. She'd just mentioned seeing him a couple of months ago. He (or his son I guess) apparently got tons of prescriptions. He always had his son with him, and he (his son) was always quiet and sickly looking. Now we know why.

Apparently he was disturbed. I was listening to a radio show this morning and they mentioned how Benoit's best friend, Eddie Guerrero, had died less than two years ago, and that may have contributed to his state of mind. There's no excuse for what he did, of course, but it's a tiny bit comforting to think that there may be some form of explanation.

Well, there's always an explanation. What's up for debate is whether he's responsible for his actions (whatever that means) or simply a victim of circumstance.

I had heard that a wrestler killed his family, but I was stunned when I got more details and found out it was Benoit. He was one of my favorite wrestlers back when I used to watch.

I can't imagine what was going on behind the scenes that would lead to this.

Things just got VERY interesting. Either that or Wikipedia has just taken the crucial next step into predicting the future.

I remember being quite impressed that Wikipedia was updated so quickly as when I first read the news about this it was breaking news. I figured it was just some big pseudo wiki/wrestling nerd.

edit: Could the wrestler himself have edited his own article? Is there a chance Wikipedia made an error when giving a time stamp to the entry?

Not likely. On the Wikipedia news entry, they even go as far as to provide the IP addresses where they came from publically, which probably wasn't a good idea to begin with.

Yeah that definately raised my eyebrow. I know I considered seeing if I could figure out who made the edit, but decided to just keep my hands free of the whole mess. I'm really trying to come up with a logical explanation that does not involve some sort of crazed criminal mastermind who is editing wikipedia and then changing real world events to fit his edits.

Looks like a "Terrible Coincidence."
quote:
The article says:

ATLANTA - A user of the web site Wikipedia confessed to making edits to pro wrestler Chris Benoit's profile mentioning the death of Benoit's wife before authorities had found her body.

In a lengthy post added to the web site early Friday, the anonymous user acknowledged being "deeply sorry" and called the situation a "terrible coincidence."

The edits were originally reported by Wikinews, an online news source connected to Wikipedia. Friday's post was added to a discussion page for the Wikinews story. According to Wikinews, the IP address of the individual is identical to that of the user who edited Benoit's profile early Monday morning.

"I was reading rumors and speculation about this matter online, and one of them included that his wife may have passed away, and I did the wrong thing by posting it on wikipedia to spite (sic) there being no evidence," the user wrote. The poster did not identify himself or herself.

The individual acknowledged being from Stamford, Conn., the home of World Wrestling Enterainment. In the message, the individual claimed no connection to WWE.

The IP address connected to the individual has a history of editing wrestling-related articles on Wikipedia, according to Sandra Ordonez, Communications Manager for Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization for Wikipedia.

"The IP address had a very consistent history," Ordonez said.

Ordonez also said the organization had verified the authenticity of the time stamps on the posts.

Ordonez referred all additional questions to authorities investigating the deaths.

I hope the guy has an air tight alibi and cannot even be indirectly linked to the wrestler.

That's an extremely odd if not unlikely coincidence.

Well, accessing Wikipedia from a computer in Stamford, the home of WWE, is certainly an indirect link.
