I'm just curious if anyone else has been watching this show on the SciFi channel? It's new this year. The first couple episodes didn't wow me but it's been steadily getting better and growing on me throughout the season and last night's episode was particularly good.

Yes, we've been watching it every sunday before BSG. I loved it from the first episode, and for a while it was the only thing that kept me watching BSG. (BSG got bad for a while there.) I love it, it's like an odd mix of BtVS, CSI and Harry Potter. It's awesome [Smile]

If you would like to see the novel precursors to the series, Jim Butcher has authored eight novels so far in the Dresden Files series. And wonder of wonders, the covers of the novels actually tell you which number of the series it is, for people like me who like to read such series in order. The novels are very similar to the TV series, only with much more depth, lots more sensational magical action, etc. Harry Dresden makes Harry Potter look lame.

I would love to read the books! If I have one problem with the series right now, it's that I want to learn a lot more about the character, Harry (and some of the others, for that matter). I'll go look for those.

I like the show, and I read the books because I enjoyed the show. However, keep in mind that the show is not a literal translation of the books. Jim Butcher himself has said that it is meant to be a sort of parallel world to the books, in response to some Dresden fan criticism. Personally I would have thought that would be obvious, because six months to a year regularly go by in the Dresdenverse between books, and there are only 8 books (9 come early April), but apparantly hard core Dresden fans were disappointed with some of the differences. Having read the books now, I might have felt the same way, but I got hooked on the show first, so I can handle it, which seems to be the way I am about books and tv/movies.

I guess I'm not a hardcore enough fan, because while I thought it was silly some of the differences they put in, I still think it's a really entertaining show.

I feel like all the actors do a great job, they capture their characters well, and the writers manage to capture the feel of the books in each episode.

Diane and I watch the show, too. We're both hooked on it.

Last week, I read the first book in the series, which was the basis for last week's show.

I enjoy both and look forward to reading the rest of the books. At least a few of the changes for the TV show made sense - the most obvious being changing the character "Bob" -- I think keeping Bob as he was in the book would have run the risk of coming across as silly and/or ridiculous, especially if their special effects were less than convincing.

Here's a reason for some Farscape and/or Stargate fans to watch next week:

Claudia Black is a guest star. [Smile]

I thought they did a great job of getting most of the story elements of the first book into one episode. It wasn't completely faithful to the book, but they took a good book and made it into a good TV episode, which is more important than remaining 100% faithful and having to turn it into a 3 hour movie.

Pretty good show, though I keep missing the beginning and having to watch those first 15 minutes after BSG... I'll have to check out the books.

Yeah. This week's episode was originally to be the series premier and was 2 hours long. My understanding is that due to certain casting issues, they couldn't complete it in time, which is why it was cut down to one hour, and moved to later in the series.
