While watching our little chicks slowly turn into chickens, and while watching a wild Turkey almost get run over by me, I was wondering -- does anybody know why birds move their heads forward and back while they walk?

I don't know, but somebody does:

However, most studies suggest that birds in motion bob their heads to stabilize their visual surroundings. In comparison, we rely more on our eye movements, not our head movements, to catch and hold images while in motion.
