Xavier and I are going there for a short visit in August (just for a day and night then off to Oswego and Syracuse to visit family). I have never been there and all the tourist sites aren't really giving me the info I need. Where is a good bed and breakfast? Are cottages as cute as they sound? I also need some restaurant recommendations. We're looking for a place where we can get a little dressed up and enjoy some fine dining. Besides a tour on the Maid of the Mist, what else should we put down on our itinerary?

I've been there twice now, once on each side. Maid of the Mist really is very cool. I'm trying to remember the other things we did, and how we did them. I know there's a place where you can go like underground behind the falls, and stand on this cool platform right next to the falls. I can't remember which side that is on though, or what tour that is.

I can post some pictures and videos of my trips there though if you wanted to see it. Sad to say I wasn't there long on either trip, and I don't much remember where we ate on either trip. Actually once we ate at this place called "Kelsey's" because a good friend of ours is named Kelsey and we thought that was funny.

The butterfly gardens nearby are actually rather nifty.

I think Lyrhawn may be talking about the Cave of the Winds (IIRC). Mama and I went, and got pretty soaked under the falls (it doesn't take you under the big falls -- that'd be rather dangerous).

Hm, I can't seem to find the pictures on my laptop, they cut off in Salem, which is the world's most boring city. I'll check my old desktop tomorrow, and search even older than that if I have to, but I WILL find those pictures!

I have every picture from that trip except the last day, which is Niagara day, and now it's just plain annoying me. I have video from the platform thing, and pictures in those tunnels, and some video from the Maid of the Mist. I vow to you I will have those pictures by the end of the week. Tomorrow is picture finding day!

Edit to add: While I'm at it, I'm going to find the daggon pictures of the Toronto side too, but those are from 2000, so they might be harder to find.

Incidentally, if you visit on the Canadian side and hang out in Toronto, go to the top of the CN Tower. They have this plastic floor there where you can see STRAIGHT DOWN to the ground below, and I swear to god I scared the crap out of myself by not only standing on it, I laid down on it for a picture, whilst grasping the sides of the floor in case the plastic broke.

I have a...moderate fear of heights when I think it might be possible there aren't adequate safety precautions, regardless of reassurances.

One time when I came back from the northern states, one of my classmates came up to me and said "That's cool, did you see niggera falls?" The 'a' was pretty silent.

I said "... wwwwwhat?"

"Niggera falls!"

"Ok, dude, that's totally not .. um, you do mean Niagara falls, right?"

"Oh, yah. Nigara."

I went there once. It rained.

But it was CANADIAN rain.

And that made all the difference.

And when are you coming back?? [Razz]

I can direct my wife here when she gets home tonight, I don't know much about the Falls area other than the major attractions you seem to have a handle on. Maid of the Mist is indeed cool, there are also jetboats that go right up to the falls (but are pretty expensive from what I remember). Looks awesome, though.

"Niagara Falls" is also a neat piece for Wind Ensemble by Michael Daugherty. Check it out.

Okay I'm still unable to find my pictures, but I'll look more this weekend.

I did however find the title to my car, which I thought I had lost, so I guess the search wasn't a total loss. I also found a CD I apparently stole from a friend of mine. Oops.

The bed and breakfasts over on the Canadian side are pretty cool. I've never slept in one, but they look great from their appearance on the outside, and there's a ton of them within walking distance to where most of the attractions are (the falls aren't so close but restaurants and museums and stuff are). If you like bed and breakfasts, then you should be happy in Niagra. There are lots of museums and stuff, and there is this cool like suspended rail car ride. It's hard to explain but there's like a canyon overlooking a river, and there are wires that connect the two ends of it, and you get to ride the wires in a little cart thing that's like 200 feet above the river below. It is really neat and I think you guys will like it. It's a great place to take photos too. There's also a thing like the Space Needle in Seatle that is there, where there's like an arcade, and then you take an elevator up to the top and you can get a great view of Niagra. You can see for miles up there. I don't think there's a restaurant in it though. In fact, I don't think there were any fine dining restaurants over there worth mentioning [Frown] , but there is still loads of stuff to do. Also I guess things like underglow on cars isn't illegal in Canada, so you can see some sweet rides going up and down the streets at night.

Cave of the Winds.

There are also some really good deals on regular hotels near the Falls, within walking distance.
