I'm leaving next Saturday for a study abroad program in Greece and Italy. Rather than pay outrageous prices to use my cell phone or try to deal with phone cards, I'm planning to just use skype to keep in touch with my parents and my boyfriend. However, I need a headset with a microphone. I suppose I could do them separately, actually, and I have two separate ports, so maybe I need to. Does anyone have any advice on good, preferably inexpensive brands?

If you are buying two seperate pieces, I wouldn't worry about it. The technology has been around long enough that it is cheap, and hard to make a defective product. Cheaper ones may not last as long, but a few dollars for heads phones is all you really need. In fact sometimes you can plug headphones into a microphone port and have it work, in which case you can really do this cheaply.

Yeah, if you're just using them for Skype, I'd go with the cheapest microphone/earbud set you can find. It'll still sound better than a cell phone.

Thanks! Looks like I'm overthinking things as usual. I'll just pick up whatever I can find, then, and make sure it works this week.

Hijack!

Anyone know a good wireless headset / mic?

I'd really prefer one that actually has speakers for both ears (this would be for gaming primarily, and free conversations over Vent)...

There is a real nice inexpensive set by Logitech with Two earphones, behind the head band, with built in removeable microphone. Most places (Walmart, Shop-Ko, computer stores) sell then, and I think the are roughly $20. They are specifically made for communicating via a computer.

Also, you can by USB Skype phones. I think about $10 to $15 for a basic handset similar to a mobile phone, and $15 to$20 for a deskset that also works as a speaker phone. Also available at the same locations. Personally, I would want a 'hands free' model of some type.

Just passing it along.

I use SKYPE myself, both skypein and skypeout, and it rocks! For about $68 a year I have a phone I can use anywhere in the US, as long as I have a computer connection.

I use a logitech one, and it is by far the best I have tried. I use the simple two headphone one, both for Ventrilo and for Skype, and the sound quality is excellent. It has both the headphones and the lic, and the mic is good enough that no one can tell I am using skype.
