I'll most likely be in the Houston area (in Kingwood to be exact) on May 9th. I graduate here at UTD on the 5th, and I should be heading back home after that. So yeah, we could have a get together of some sorts. Hopefully we can pull in more than just the two of us though.

I'll be in Houston and I enjoy eating, so I'm down for sure. You want I should check to see if there's anything interesting going on around here that day?

I live in Dallas and graduate on the 5th. I currently have no job lined up and am free that week. But my life is all in flux right now. Count me as a maybe.

I may be in Houston (Kingwood to be exact, as well), at the end of May, my family is still working out logistics. So I'll probably miss this gathering.

I vote for downtown, but if you want something gulfcoast-esque, the Kema Boardwalk has decent seafood and is on the bay.
I looked for something interesting going on, but didn't see anything. Lots of bingo, poetry slams and karaoke, but nothing interesting. Kings of Leon are playing on the 12th, but that doesn't help you out much.

Depending on where you go, downtown can be nice. Kema is nice too (from the few times I've been there). Wherever you guys go though, I'll try and get there.

My meeting is in NE Houston, but I will be staying in the NASA area. Keemah will be fine. There is a really good Mexican restaurant in that area named Melly's.

Kemah is nice and I think I could get there. Whatever sort of food you guys want is fine with me, as I'm open to possibilities. I can vouch for the quality of the seafood at a few of the seafood places on the Kemah Boardwalk though (as every time I'm there with family we go to a seafood place).

seafood? *makes disgusted face* Poetry slam sounds kinda fun. I'm planning on coming up to Houston for it. Still no job, but eh, I can spend a day or two in Houston.

But yeah, the only reason I mentioned seafood is because that's what Kemah is really big on. There are other restaurants around, but there's just a lot of seafood ones. This doesn't mean we have to have seafood though. I mean brojack suggested a Mexican place, which would be nice.

Mexican, seafood (mmm Crawfish) anything is fine with me. Where will everyone be coming from? I'm sure we can find something good at a central location. No sense if fighting the traffic if you don't have to.
Farmgirl, If you are ever in my area, let me know. I have been meaning to get out to Bixby area and meet Boon also.

I'll be coming from Kingwood, which is north of Houston. Getting to downtown doesn't take too long, although getting to Kemah might take a bit longer.

I'd like a little cheaper than Pappadeaux's, but it doesn't have to be tons cheaper. I can afford to spend a little more for one meal.

Hmm, in Kemah, the least expensive are still gonna be pretty expensive. I don't mind, but, the restaurants are all chains and it's not like the fish is fresh from the bay. It's still shipped from fisheries the same as every other restaurant in each respective chain, so it's really all about the scenery.
If we want something that will be unique to the region, we might try some TexMex. I'm sure you're familiar, but if you've read any of the threads on the 'rack about TexMex, you may recall that I'm a huge fan of Mama Ninfa's as the home of the fajita.
Or! (Best idea coming up...) we could go to a Goode Company rest. Locally owned and operated, they have lots of restaurants, so any type of food available. My personal favorites are the BBQ and seafood.
Or! There's a BBQ restaurant that is a personal favorite of Dubya's nearby that I've never tried. I'd like to.
Or! I make a mean rack of ribs.

I've had the Goode Company BBQ and it was pretty good. I've also been to Mama Ninfa's, so I can vouch for that too.

Haven't been to Goode Company but Mama Ninfa's is good. We can stay downtown or north so PF does not have as far to travel.

Mama Nifa's sounds good- I love TexMex food. Never heard of Goode Company but that sounds fine as well. And if you guys want seafood, I'll work on expanding my horizons. pfresh is my ride, so I'll be coming from Kingwood as well.

Are we still on for this guys? If we are, I'll start asking my brother for the best directions there (as he loves the place and lives near the area).

vonk, I think I can recognize you from your pics on me-mud.org. I'll have to look up the other folks, if they have pictures. My album is named Jack D. Lyons (I guess I took them literally when they asked for my full name). Just look for the big bald guy.

I'm a female with white/blond hair. It's pretty distinctive, but on top of that I'll e-mail you guys my cell number in case there's a problem. And I'm up, down, sideways for drinks after.

Heh, no, not really. As I'm sure you know, one of the many things Houston is famous for is being the home of Chopped & Screwed. I was off though, which I'm sure is why you got confused: Slim Thug was with Swishahouse, the southside hiphop group, whereas C&S is from the northside (don't want to mix those guys up ) and Screw City was a local mix tape put out not too long ago.
Another characteristic of C&S is a heavy dose of lean, or purple drank. It's a combination of codine cough syrup, sprite and candy.
The last line is a quote from Houston's own Big Moe, I think on his album City of Syrup, but maybe on Purple World.
And that ends today's lesson on the Diry South. Heh, no, I'm kidding. I'm not in that scene at all. But it is fun to pretend...

I'm from Houston, and I knew none of that. Then again I'm detached from most scenes, so it makes sense that I wouldn't know it.

Yeah, I really wouldn't expect most people to know about it. I happened to live in a not so good part of town for a while, so I woulda had to be deaf not to catch some of it. But that's one of Houston's biggest contributions to American culture. Possibly the biggest.

1. The eight wonder of the world 2. ZZ Top 3. Moving sidewalks (flat escelators first used in the Astrodome and ZZ Tops first band name) 4. Johnson Space Center (Houston, we have a problem!) 4. Enron

Haha! While all of those are great, I don't know how I would quantify their contribution or influence as compared to the notoriety, income and media presence of some of the big name hip hop artists to come out of Houston. But, ya know, that's just, like, my opinion, man.
