I just got back from one of the Metroparks near Detroit where my Dad was displaying and competing some of his old tractors.

We have an old farm in the family (in Ohio) dating back to the Civil War era where my Dad grew up on for a time...hence his obsession with the antique tractors. I think he has almost a donzen now.

Anyone else into this interesting pastime?

This thread reminds me of a song. Not one I PARTICULARLY like, but I heard it a lot while I was on bedrest in Dallas and spent much of the day harassing the djs of my local favorite radio station... Ah, the memories.

I like antique tractors. I have a vintage one, 1968/9 David Brown 990 that gets used every day, and an antique farmer that goes along with it. My farm is in Coshocton County, Ohio.

My dad goes to the Portland (IN) Engine fair every few years, I can't because I'd be bored out of my mind and die from allergies. But it is a very large county fairgrounds completely filled with tractors and steam engines, late august or early september, on the IN-OH border, in northcentralish IN.

Whereabouts in Ohio, Telp? We have 10 acres in Harrison county that we're slowly turning into a small farm. Eventually we'll be looking for more acreage in the area, but this size is about right to learn on and experiment with.

Antique tractors are neat, but unfortunately I don't have the mechanical know-how to really appreciate them. My interest mainly lies in old/antique hand tools. I'll be learning how to use a European scythe, once the thing actually gets here. I'm also interested in learning the methods and details of making loose hay by hand.

My farm is just outside the town of Hicksville, Defiance County, northwestern corner of the State.
Yes...that's the name of the town. [Smile]

Oh, one of my friend's dads is into these. He has three or four engines from the very earliest days of engines. There weren't even any tractors yet. They just hooked random farm equipment to this thing with belts and used it to run them. He ran it for me. It's the most awesome infernal contraption you can imagine. The sound it makes is beyond belief. I just LOVED it.

He's an engineer, naturally. Chyea for my geeky brethren! Hooray for the sons and daughers of Martha! [Smile]

How far from the Hornish's? Or maybe they're actually in the town of Defiance, but I was thinking it was somewhere smaller.

I grew up in the summers on a farm in upstate New York.
I can still hear the sound of Mr. (Name Removed 's)tractor put-putting up the hill, because it meant I would get to ride with him.

That was in the Sixties, and the tractor was old then, so I am thininkg it must have been twenty or more years older. Do you have a link to pictures? I could tell you which one.

I even remember the color. It was a deep read, turned burgundy. The seat was metal, with holes.

It is like one of these old beauties, but had the skinny wheels, I think, not the wide ones.

Cool thread though! I love tractors, always have, but there is nothing, nothing in this world, like the sound an old tractor makes, when its little smokestack kind of coughs and sputters.

Well actually, a (current) Harley Davidson sounds just like a 50s John Deere.
