Bear Grylls is my hero (along with mr.OSC). that marathon today was awesome. i should read Bear's books. anyone else love that show?

man vs wild is the best summer tv show this year. check it out fridays at 9. its the only summer tv show i'll watch.

I like survivor-man more because he is out there by himself and Bear has a camera guy with him, but to each his own I guess.

Survivorman is ten times better than Bear. In Man vs. Wild many of the situations are clearly staged. In the one where he clmbed down a waterfall I could clearly see a line tied to his waist. I lost all interest in his show at that moment. When he jumped into the water in the arctic he had two clearly dug hand holes for him to exit from. I mean, yea, he is able to give great survival tips but he is not really putting him self at risk as much as he lets on to be. Where as in survivior man he is absolutely alone and while, not doing any crazy stuff like jumping in to water or down cliffs, he is truely surviving on his own. And he does all of this while carrying a 50 pound pack of camera gear. Survivorman is totally a better show.

I love Man vs. Wild, though the why is a bit nebulous. Maybe it is that find the name "Bear Grylls" comical. Maybe it's that it's interesting subject matter, and Bear has more personality than survivorman. Maybe it's just it's fun to watch the poor guy suffer as I sit comfortably on my couch with a bottle of water and handful of Cheezits.

Bear does those things so that you know they can be done. There is one episode where he demonstrates how you can save yourself from falling down an ice crevace if the ice suddenly break under you. Unfortunately the ice did not break in that particular instance so he hurled himself down the side of a crevace to show that it still works and then demonstrated how to pull yourself back up.
Though to be honest I enjoy both shows alot. Bear having a tiger shark prodding at his boat was pretty cool though.

I don't have a problem with safety precautions. The things he does and teaches...don't guarantee survival, they just make it more likely. If he didn't take safety precautions he might be able to survive most of what he does, but something would come along that would kill him.

Survivorman has safety precautions too, and he's got a crew that keeps tabs on him. In his frozen adventure he had a gun, in case a polar bear attacked. In his stranded in a life raft adventure the weather started getting rough, his tiny ship was tossed, and if not for the courage of his fearless crew, the life raft would be lost.

I like most of the shows on the Discovery Channel, I don't think it gets nearly the credit it deserves. Between that, Myth Busters, Deadliest Catch and Dirty Jobs, I have more than enough TV programming for a week.
Edit to add: And Futureweapons, Shark Week, and Planet Earth, and I want to catch an episode of Cash Cab, I haven't seen it yet.

Bear is amazing. His personality is very fresh compared to Surviorman's. He also shows a lot more unique and interesting specific survival techniques.
To otterk10: I DVRed Bear on Conan, but it didn't work! How was it? Also, if anyone knows where I'd be able to watch it that'd be cool.

It was pretty funny. The best part was when Conan asked Bear how bad the food at a restaurant has to be for Bear to ask them to take it back. I'm guessing that the interview is on youtube.

So, I've watched the first few episodes of Man vs. Wild.
I'm virtually positive that they're cheating, and quite a bit.
Still, if I take it as something that demonstrates interesting survival skills with a fictional storyline, it's quite entertaining.
