Constantly I am reminded I live in the future.

quote:

The Brief

Try to encourage people to take a taxi with Frankfurt Taxi Services after they’ve had a few drinks, rather than get behind the wheel of their own car.

The Challenge

So how to capture the attention of any potential drunk drivers? Well, where do most people go when they’re drunk? (Apart from the bar, that is. Or maybe a kebab.) They go to the toilet. As such, we thought the urinal would be the perfect medium to reach our target audience in a fresh, surprising way.

Our Solution

The Piss-Screen - a pressure-sensitive inlay set within urinals, enabling users to play while they pee. We installed this newfangled creation in male restrooms across Frankfurt, teaming up with a variety of bars, clubs and cafés. The game itself was displayed on a screen above each urinal, and would automatically start as soon as someone began to pee. The player could then control the car whilst relieving himself – if they wanted the car to go right, they simply peed to the right (and visa versa).

http://www.piss-screen.de/

I haven't decided if I think, despite it being pretty out there, something like this is actually helpful or not, and if the money used to produce and install it could be used to fund a more conventional awareness effort. But I at least think there should be a keypad and a high score chart.

Do you think it's better than a sign over the urinal with the number of the taxi service and a cute slogan and graphic?

Probably not. People would just drink more, to make themselves have to pee again, to go back and play the game. There's probably a million ways people can abuse these, and they sound expensive. Really not a good idea in my books.

Don't you mean a wiener?

(Sorry, couldn't help it. The pressure was just too much, and it trickled out despite my best efforts.)

This isn't going to attract many women gamers.

I wonder:
quote:
The game ultimately culminates in a shocking crash-sequence, leaving the viewer with little doubt as to the repercussions of driving while drunk.
This seems to indicate that the game always crashes (although I could be wrong). Isn't this heavy handed enough for people just to ignore it? i.e. if the car crashes both when I first use the urinal when not drunk and after I am drunk, then I'm likely to ignore it (in the sense of not modifying my behaviour, not that I'm going to go out drunk driving out of spite)

Perhaps the game could figure out the amount of alcohol in the urine and decide whether or not you crash based upon that...

This could help to deal with the issue.

So what you're saying is, this concept is all wet.

Well, it does say:

quote:
The overall design of the driving game was similar in style to that of Need for Speed, requiring relatively quick reactions. Obviously the more drunk you are, the slower your response, reinforcing the effects of alcohol to the gamer.

ketchupqueen: "And thats when I shot him, your honour" [Wink]

aiua: Thats an interesting tidbit to know. Still, it does not really address my point. AFAIK for the current implementation, there is no way to tell purely based on reflexes whether one is drunk or not. I have friends that probably have better "twitch" reflexes drunk than I do normally.

Thus I have a hunch that the current implementation will crash no matter what at the end of the trip. Sure, it will drive differently on the way there, but it probably just crashes no matter how sober you are.

Thus, I do not think it will be very effective at changing behaviour.

But if you're going into the bar to drink alcohol, how often do you have to pee before you've had any drinks? I would think the majority of people using the bar's restroom are drunk to some degree or another, and the people who are not are probably not drinking that night anyway (DD and such) so it doesn't really matter.

*looks innocent*

I don't know what you're talking about, Mucus.

It's not like I'm trying to pad my post count or anything. You can wipe that idea flush out of your mind. I'm just commenting on a topic of serious import-- accidents and preventing them amongst men who drink.

*looks angelic*
