I had heard of this before, but never in any kind of detail. Once in a while, email forwards actually ARE good for something.

Very interesting, good to know.

My health teacher could be smoking crack but she said that most lumps are caught by women's husbands/long time lovers, for obvious reasons. [Wink]

Here is a recent article about breast self-exams:

According to several long-term studies, including a 10-year study of 267,000 women, there is absolutely no difference in survival rates between women who perform regular self-exams and those who don't.

Interestingly though, women who performed frequent poll dances in front of webcams tend to live a long, healthy life. Just FYI ladies [Wink] [Kiss]

Yep, I was aware of this other kind. I'm glad you mentioned it, though! The video clip was very interesting.

Regarding self-exams, I think it would be helpful if the instructions for doing it have more details on what the lumps are supposed to feel like, and where they tend to be. I mean, breast tissue is kind of lumpy anyway.

Now I'm gonna freak out every time I get mastitis...

But it's good to know.

Well, I have a lump. And it hurts. Time to *sigh* try to find a doctor who'll listen. Again.

ETA: Since coming to Sri Lanka, though, I've been prone to *cough* cysts in embarrassing *cough* places. The heat, or something...

Though given how rare it is, I guess I can see how the breast cancer foundations want to put their money and effort where the greatest risk is. IBC accounts for 1 to 6% of new cancer cases according to the Komen site.

Well, you learn something new every day. I sent this info to many women I know, including my Mom. She wrote back to tell me that her good friend who died of breast cancer almost three years ago had IBC. So why did I not know about this (IBC, I mean)? Why has my Mom been bugging me to get my first mammogram (I am 34) and not told me about this?

quid - I hope you can find a good doctor to have it checked out! Hopefully it is nothing more than a fibroid (my mother had a lumpectomy several years ago and luckily it was only a fibroid mass).

I had never heard of this type of breast cancer and am glad to have learned more about it. Knowledge is power! [Smile]

Thanks for passing that on. I am in a high risk group for breast cancer but didn't know there was another kind to watch out for.
