We're mostly fine; left arm kills; going to Dr.; how much to re-install deployed airbags on your own nickel? Liability insurance, other car looked fine.

We needed to replace our towing vehicle, not this one. Do Subarus tow? Of course we don't want gas piggy, when hybrid minivan?

I'm glad to hear you're mostly fine. I'd love it even more if you were totally fine. Take care of yourself.

I have heard from several sources, verbally, that repacking an airbag is extremely expensive. Your insurance *might* cover it. <crosses fingers>

I hope you're still Ok after seeing the doctor. [Frown]

I think the airbag is what injured me. It also broke the windshield. I have never been a fan of airbags. Does this confirm my suspicious or serve me right? [Smile]

No broken bones.

The cost of reinstalling airbags is almost always a four digit number. Six if you count the ones behind the decimal point. In a moderately old car, that usually guaratnees it's going to be a total.

Airbags are wonderful if you're going 75 miles an hour. Airbags are terrible if you're going 20 miles an hour and they go off below the type of impact they're normally supposed to go off at.

pooka, I'm glad you are okay! Be sure to wash the area of deploy against skin carefully -- there can be lingering chemical burns from some of the powder used to pack airbags.

----

As an aside, we have a black 200[3] Saturn Ion with low mileage that has never been in a crash, and we are selling it for under Blue Book value (just the cost of the rest of the payments). I do not know if this would be a better option for you than repacking airbags, but I would give you first dibs before we take it to a seller.

Our only problem with it is that it is prohibitively expensive to bring it into Canada, so we have not done so formally yet. The insurance from the US firm will run out in a few months, though, and we can't insure in Canada without paying duty, taxes, etc. -- too much to be worth it for us.

Oh, e-mail me. You never know!

I'm not sure how fast I was going or what. I think it may have been me going 55 and the people in front of me were slowing for an exit. All I know is I'd just asked my husband if he thought I was pretty, and turned to smile at him. He said "yes" followed shortly by "look out!" I'm so proud he didn't swear.

CT: What type is it, and what general area would we need to negotiate delivery for? I'm in Maryland.

Maryland is on the other side of the country! [Frown] It is a 2003 Saturn Ion 3 4-door automatic. We still owe about $2500 on it, and Blue Blook value is $6760. But shipping all the way to you would cost about $2000 anyway.

It does have (cosmetic only) scratches on both sides -- me and the underground parking garage! -- so fixing that would be a tidy sum. Doesn't affect the driving at all, but it does affect the value, so I included that in the Blue Book estimate by their checklist.

I doubt it would be useful to you at such a distance. Ah, well. We will find her a home via a seller in Seattle. [Smile]

My husband wants to know where up and down you are on the west coast. If you are in Seattle, he might hatch some crazy plan.

CT - if I'm understanding that right and you're selling an 03 Ion for $2500, and it's in Seattle, I may be extremely interested if pooka doesn't take it!

And if not, I'd be happy to help you sell it here, or act as a go-between if necessary.

Edit: on topic, pooka, if you or someone you know is reasonably handy with cars, you can replace the airbag module yourself, which may be a better solution than trying to have it repacked.

My reasonably handy with car folk don't live close by, alas. But my husband wants to make a business related trip to Vegas, apparently.

I've ridden in said Ion (back when it was in Wisconsin). It's a very nice car.

(Thanks, Primal Curve! [Smile] )

pooka, I have checked sakeriver and will find you tomorrow. We live in Vancouver, British Columbia -- just a ferry ride from Seattle -- and the car is stored in a parking garage here.

erosomniac, that is terribly kind of you. I might just take you up on it, if pooka ends up passing. (on the offer of either a consideration for purchase or as go-between) I had asked mr_porteiro_head & beverly first sometime back, and they had offered to go-between, so I would give them a call first, if it got to the go-between point (I'd rather give commission to a friend). But thank you so much!

We had been thinking we'd keep it in case I needed to go down to the States to practice medicine, but it looks like the paperwork here will go through, so we are back to selling it again.

There wouldn't be any commission involved. [Wink]

I looooove buying and selling cars. It's a vice. I've gone through four cars in the past...two years.

Well, now, you could love it just as much with due compensation for your time and effort. *grin

Seriously, I wouldn't do it any other way. I just wouldn't. I couldn't bear not making it mutually financially profitable, given that I am at a time in my life when I can do so.

---

My sweetie is checking on the exact amount we still owe. He also reminded me that it will probably need new tires and the windshield is chipped in a way that can't be repaired (mid-windshield rock from a truck) -- so we would have to (for moral reasons, before it could be driven) address those issues, and that would add to the cost. But no more than the actual cost (we'd keep receipts). I'll figure this out tomorrow.

We already paid for a full mechanic's assessment as part of the process to see how much it would cost to bring it over. The customs assessment mechanic is very thorough, and we have the report.

All we want is to not have it as debt each month any more, and we want to make sure we don't cause problems for anyone by doing so. I'd rather keep paying money on a car we don't use than have someone be at all unsafe because of something I did (or didn't do).

Hey CT, I sent you another PM. I'm fairly sure we want it. My email, in case you can't see it, is cardiotricia _ at _ yah oo. My husband is interested in flying to Seattle next Friday evening to get it, so the sooner we can work out a game plan the better. Let me know!
