I'm looking to buy a new mp3 player before I go to college (and possibly a digital camera, but I'll get to that later). I'd rather not spend over $250--of course, there are players listed for $300 that Amazon sells for $215, so I'm searching for the best prices.

I wanted to know what mp3 players y'all swear by. CNet, for instance, has glowing reviews of the iRiver Clix. I do rather like the built-in FM radio, but it's not essential. I don't have major league storage requirements either: in three years, I've yet to entirely fill the 6GB on my iPod Mini. Video would be cool, but it's hardly what I want a music player for.

See, the reason I'm asking is because it seems like everyone uses the iPod. I'm afraid I've really been turned off the iPod and most Apple products by my experiences. My iPod got 4.5 hours battery life out of the box, and within a year it was at 45 minutes. It also had all sorts of software issues, and I spent more time dealing with tech support than actually using it. Now they've told me getting it to work properly again will cost more than the original device did; needless to say, I'm not at all pleased. Still, not knowing anyone who DOESN'T use the iPod, I'm at my wit's end to get a good review of other mp3 players.

Um, also:
I'm going to college and I think I might be making lots of pictures. The disposable cameras I buy are getting pretty silly. Can anyone reccomend a good digital camera (also under $250)?

I have an Ipod Shuffle and spent less then 100 dollars for it. I was told that you have to train the Ipod when you first get it by letting in die down all the way before you charge it all the way back up.

I was told to do that at least once a month, and so far I have had no issue with my Ipod. This should work with other Ipod's.

I don't know much about MP3s, I'm looking into one for myself and everyone has told me to "just forget it and get an IPod". I've had good experiences with Apple products in the past, so I have no problem with IPod really.

As far as cameras go, I like the Nikon CoolPix line. I have one at work that's about 2 years old. My boyfriend bought a newer model at Christmas, and I just got an even newer one for my daughter's HS graduation in June. I don't know how much my work paid for mine, but the others were between $190 and $220. They take great pictures and are very easy to use. They also take video and use SD memory cards (which I've been told are better than the XD ones, but don't take my word for it. I really haven't a clue.)

I got a Zen for about 50$ and they work great. It has 1 gig memory, but I use it mainly for shuffle purposes.

I have a Creative Zen Nano which I love. It's only 1 GB, but you can buy it for $50, $35 if you can wait and are willing to deal with mail-in rebate crap. It's better than an ipod shuffle in every way that matters to me.

Buy.com has the 2GB Creative Muvo (virtually identical to the zen nano) for $40.

I think I might buy it as a gift.
