That's weird, all right. In general I'm against the culture of extreme reproductive technology, though if one of my sisters asked me I'd probably go along with it.

Is it a "Well, if they don't have the genetics to reproduce it's prolly best that they don't pass that on" thing?
Is it a "we're overpopulated already" thing?
Cuz really, as industrialization spreads our birth rate is falling to below replacement. And I don't see why someone would seek to deny kids to people who actually want them.

Wow, thats a lot of medical technology. Bone-marrow transplant, ovarian transplant, in vitro fertilization, its pretty impressive.
TP: I'm not sure that depopulation is really an issue. Its only the rich countries that have birth rates below replacement and immigration usually handles that quite well.
FG: Or cheaper for that matter. They could have just done IVF with an anonymous donor as well.

I don't think I could donate my genetic material so that somebody else could have a child, because to me, it would be my child that I purposely abandoned to be raised by others.

I'm confused as to how an egg produced by a donated ovary is somehow superior to a donated egg. It's still someone else's egg.

To me its not really a step in any direction, its more like pivoting your foot forward and realizing you can't stand on that ground anyway. But technically your foot was closer to the line.

I think the positive of a donated ovary is if it worked totally correctly you could concieve naturally with someone else's egg instead of AI.

The reason the sister didn't just donate an egg (or eggs), according to the article, is that the sister did not want to go through the hormone treatment necessary to stimulate egg production.

Also having an ovary and menstruating again may actually be better for the woman than being in "artificial menopause" after the cancer treatment.
Several things. One is that our healthcare system is already so overtaxed, and there are a lot of children who could be adopted. Sure they aren't babies with a blank slate, but they also won't have a Pinnochio complex, and also what Dagonee said.

I'm either very lazy or lacking in the particular maternal instinct that makes women want babies. I like kids. I like talking to them and finding out what they think about things. Babies to me are just a step to the cool part.
So I don't get the need to have a baby that I recognize in other women. For me, if I couldn't conceive, I'd just go start the adoption paperwork. I wouldn't get the hormone shots or ovary transplants.
So while it all seems a little silly to me, I do have to respect what women are willing to go through for an event that I consider an inconvenience. They're tougher and more motivated than I am.
