It's been a rough summer. I'm staying in hotels so that I can work for my old employer (anyone want to discuss "clean coal"?) for the summer.
The first hotel had internet service, but was too expensive. The second had no internet service, and no kitchen, but it was cheap. (did I mention that the door didn't lock?). The third hotel had a kitchen and internet service, but it was wifi only, no plug in ethernet.
Some of you offered help getting a wifi card in my computer, but: 1. It seemed ridiculous paying more than I pay my ISP for two months service just so I can have service in a hotel for the same time period, especially when it's likely I'd never use it again, and 2. I found a hotel that has an ethernet connection that's cheaper than the previous hotel. It's older and shoddier, but I can live with the character.
Anyway, for most of the summer I haven't been able to do much on hatrack, because I could only get on at the library, which had it's own set of problems, but I've finally got access in my room. So here I am.
I missed the whole Harry Potter excitement thing, too.
Oh, and I've decided to quit teaching...

Also, amazing how many people took the move when they closed the other site. I thought everybody quit, but there are a lot of familiar faces, so it's been a nice reunion.
Also, It kind of amazes me how much of my work still exists here. Everywhere I look I see equipment I designed, or ran, or blew up... A lot of the current projects are based on the work I did that has my name on the patents.
And really, I enjoy technical work because the rewards are so direct. I do something, and I can see that it was done, and see how well it worked. That's very gratifying.
