Did anyone see episode 1 tonight? I almost missed it. They didn't seem to advertise this season nearly as heavily as the first. I hope the network isn't bailing on it yet.

I still like it. I don't know if it's the best show on TV, but it's definitely cool. Watching it tonight I realized that I probably have a special affection for it because it reminds me of Probe, possibly the first show I ever got really attached to, and whose cancellation still gives me little pangs of melancholy when I think about it.

The sci-fi/mystery wasn't the most compelling in the show's history, but they used it to screw with the character dynamics of the show in very intriguing ways. Maybe that's even better.

I'm glad it's back. Nice to have something to look forward to on Tuesday nights.

I was very glad they didn't cop out and forget the whole "4 years of memory in my head" aspect. And the way it played out makes for some mighty interesting future storylines...

I was a trifle annoyed at Jack's little slips. This was supposed to be a month after the accident, right? Should he have gotten past that by now, or shouldn't everyone else have gotten used to it? Has Jo ignored Taggert all month? Little sloppy, there. But decent otherwise, I thought.

Don't read if you didn't watch the episode!

I'm still not sure how I feel about Henry slipping to the dark side, but man will he be a scary bad guy. He can't do too much before Carter starts to get suspicious, but he wouldn't know why.

I watched it last night, first time ever.

Anyone feel like summarizing season 1 for me?

Another quibble or maybe two:

The conversations between Henry and Carter implied a *shared* memory of a common timeline, but they are from different timelines.

Henry, who went back to save Kim, is a product of timline A. The Henry who lived and experienced the changed timeline stayed back.

Carter is a product of the timeline B - the one that Henry created.

Unresolved questions: If things have already changed, is there now a timeline C? How does that not create a new paradox all by itself?

Uprooted,

First season, US Marshall Jack Carter is transporting a prisoner (who turns out to be his daughter Zoe) back to LA when he runs off the road in a storm. He and Zoe wander into a town they were never supposed to find where super brilliant scientists create all kinds of wacky experiments.

Carter's charming common sense solves a crime and gets him named sheriff of Eureka. The season alternated between experiments run amuck and the mystery of the artifact, a powerful glowing thing we know nothing about.

The season 1 finale had Starke, the head of Global Dynamics and Carter's love interest's ex-husband, and Kim, Carter's best friend's girl, trying to sample the artifact. They did, but it released a huge wave of energy that killed Kim. Henry (the best friend) couldn't deal with Kim being dead so he went back in time and saved her.

In the new timeline, Starke lost his job, Henry became head of Global Dynamics, and Carter got the girl. For four years, life was good. Until the orginal timeline began intruding on the alternate and the space-time continuum began to unravel.

Carter went back in time and stopped Henry from saving Kim and kept the timeline in tact. Except that creates the big continuity error as there should now be two Henrys: the one who was part of the original timeline and the one who came back in time to save Kim.

The science isn't great, which is a little sad, but the people and ideas are interesting enough that I can usually push the "I believe" button and keep going.

No two Henrys. Remember, Jack's mind was sent back, not his body. Presumably the same happened for Henry.

(Which is a different problem, as neither man should have had the problem. If I sent my preaent mind back to my body of 20 years ago and had the random thought "I want to get on my computer" my mind would throw up the image of a TRS-80 or Apple IIe because according to my brain of that time, that's what computers are, then. If they couldn't send anything physical back, they shouldn't have had anything more than the memories already in their past brains and possibly their short term memory from the future, which would have faded quickly as it wouldn't have had any referrents to hang on to. End of rant.)

But Henry specifically erased Jack's long term memories of the other timeline. That means that they had their long term memories when they went back.

No... Henry sent his mind back to his previous self and saved Kim. And then lived through the same 4 years that Jack did. Oh. Wait. And then Jack went back to the point where Henry was about to do that and stopped him. So Henry never lived through that 4 years. You're right. Huh.

I didn't say Jack didn't have those long term memories. I said he shouldn't have. But then science, even science fiction, is pretty hit or miss on this show. I like it anyway.

I am glad they changed the Henry character. Before the season 1 finale, he was Mr. Fixit. In a town full of the most brilliant people he seemed to be the only one who did science for the town--everything from changing bulbs in the towns stop light to running full body autopsies.

I'm really enjoying the new direction they've taken this season. Between Jack getting stuck in the therapy device and the shared dreams one last night, they're really starting to do some nice character pieces. I also love how they're bringing out everyone's darker, more selfish side this season.

It's still fun, but it's not as cute as the first season.

Jo's dream sequence was hilarious. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. [Smile]
