Ok, so I jumped on the AVG bandwagon a few years ago believing it was the best free application in town. It seems to have done right by me but some programs I run have recently have had conflicts stemming from AVG running in the backround. A few years have passed and I was wondering if a bigger and better program has shown up for $0.00 or if I should stick with AVG.
I appreciate your input.

Huh. Well, I'm still using AVG and I haven't had any conflicts. Yet. I haven't used any other free antivirus programs in the last couple of years, so I also don't have any recommendations. Good luck.
(What programs is it conflicting with?)

Avast and AVG are the two top in my own novice opinion. At the moment I'm using AVAST, in Vista no less, with no conflicts.

We (Fahim, the computer programmer hubby who keeps up on all this, and me, the beneficiary of his research) agree with Avast and AVG. Fahim's also using Avast with Vista with no problems. I'm using AVG on XP with no problems.

The place where I take my computer to be healed when it is broken, which is an excellent place and very sensible and helpful, has always recommended AVG to me. As well as Spybot and Ad-Aware and Crap-Cleaner.

After posting last night, I did some more research on the internet, and general consensus seems that AVG is the best hands off security program out there, which is what I'd like. Others sounded like they need more hand holding, or interaction, and I just don't want that. I like the auto updates of AVG and scheduler.
The problem stemmed from a "OS Paged Pool Memory Low" error in games included with The Orange Box from Valve. Not HL2 so much, but the episodes, Portal and Team Fortress 2. Others that had this error, said that turning off AVG (other antivirus programs don't seem to have the problem) did the trick, but I was trying to just come up with another application, so I don't have to shutdown AVG every time I play, just to have to go relaunch it. I can be forgetful. Not that I am particularly careless when computing, but I like to have my bases covered.
Another suggestion that I haven't tried yet was to go into the registry and modify the Paged Pool Memory settings, alotting 256MB to it. But that seems low, and I didn't know if that would interfere or conflict with my preexisting Virtual Memory Settings. Paged Pool Memory is something I know nothing about.

AVG has never detected any viruses on my computer. So either it's completely ineffective, or I'm good at not getting virused. I like that it doesn't slow my computer down like Norton did, though.

Norton is a complete memory hog to the point of disabling computers. In my experience. I stay far, far, far away from any/all Norton products. IIRC, it's also almost completely impossibly to remove every single component that Norton installs.
