My oldest has been sick for a week. We had figured it was viral, and didn't sweat it, but now that it's been going on for a week and she's missed three days of school this week (and she is a straight-A student who never misses school especially not now since she's in high school and loving it) I decided enough was enough and called the doc. The appointment is in about an hour.
Thing is, my husband mentioned "I hope it isn't mono" to me on the phone and now I'm worried and a bit freaked - because doggone it, I checked WebMD and she seems to have all the symptoms of mono. Her major symptom is extreme fatigue, accompanied by headache, chills, aches, and sore throat. She basically sleeps all the time and has no appetite, waking to complain of pain in her head and/or throat and taking OTC painkillers, then falling back asleep. I've been pushing liquids to keep her hydrated (we have insanely hot temps right now) but I've now thrown up my hands and conceded I need a professional to look at her.
I'm a little scared though because this child never misses school, and she has been in tears because of the pain in her head and the body aches, and that is not like her.
I'll let you guys know what the doctor says.

*hugs* I had mono in high school. It sucked, but the good news was that the work was not too hard to make up and it is fairly easily curable. The bad news is that it takes some serious bed rest. *wince*
Poor baby. Let us know what the doctor says.

Dr. said there's lots of kids with this particular bug and it takes 7-10 days to get over, so she should be on the tail end of it now. Lots of rest, lots of fluid and she should be okay to return to school on Monday.
Now if I could just get her to eat something, I asked her what she'd had so far today and she said "A granola bar. I think."
I'm sooooo glad it's not mono, I was worried. Doctor was too...she looked at me at one point during the exam and said "sounds like mono, Mom" Fortunately though, she didn't have the swollen lymph nodes or anything else, and the tests were all negative. She did do a 24 hour strep test, though so if anything grows they'll call us. In the meantime, we're just going to let her rest and try to feel better. Thanks for the good wishes!

I had mono in high school. The symptoms sound like how I felt at the time. I remember being so tired that I fell asleep sitting up while in the middle of talking to my doctor in her office.
I was out for a month, even though my doctor wanted me to stay home longer because I had a severly enlarged spleen and she didn't want me getting elbowed in the hallways. But my teachers were very understanding and did everything they could to help me catch up and get my work done. I was even nominated as Student of the Month by my math teacher because I got back on track so quickly. Being sick for all that time was actually a shining academic moment of me.
If she has to be out for awhile, maybe see about getting some of her work from her teachers. She may not feel up to it but once she gets some meds in her and starts feeling better, it may help her if she's not stressing out about falling behind.

Oh, I'm so glad it's not mono! I hope she gets better soon. It sounds like you're taking excellent care of her and doing everything that can be done.

I think I have that same virus, but I am not a kid. They tested me for strep last Friday and again this Friday cause I was still sick and still in pain. The good thing was, my dr said no trying to go back to work. I did that earlier this week and my fever shot back up and all my other symptoms relapsed. Monday they want me to either be better (and go to work) or be in the office for more tests.

I had mono last year. Both the strep and mono tests were negative, though. It wasn't until after they did the blood tests that they confirmed mono, and by then, I was half over it.
My thoughts go out to you and your daughter. I hope she feels better soon.

Well, we're not done yet - the doctor's office called this morning. Seems the 24 hour strep test did come back positive, so they are calling in antibiotics.
Still, that's okay - at least it's treatable and hopefully she'll be feeling better by Monday.

When I was tested for mono, I think they told me that it can take awhile after symptoms appear before the mono test comes back positive. A week might be enough, though. At any rate, I hope your daughter starts feeling better soon. Strep throat is no fun

Glad it's only strep. I had strep 6 or 7 times as a kid. It sucked, but I enjoyed the time off school. I hope she feels better soon!
