DC's "official origin" for the Joker continues. More gratuitous 1989 Batman movie references. Some rather off-putting sequences that portray ol' Bats as a whiny, indecisive sap.

Most of the comic is set in the bottom of a chemical vat, where the guy who becomes the Joker thinks long and hard about whether or not to swim to the surface. Proof that he's crazy, I guess.

Batman is horried when he hears the newly minted Joker scream with laughter about how there's a bunnyrabbit shape on the Moon.

Batman: "What have I done?!?"

Except, as portrayed in the issue it really wasn't Batman's fault that the Joker fell into that vat. And...there seems to be nothing preventing Batman from just going over and capturing the guffawing, off-his-guard lunatic.

All this and another reference to Diner Waitress Harley! Ick. [Razz]

What's going on? I thought that Harley was a psychiatrist at Arkham...

Of course the moon has a bunny on it. What's horrifying about that?

I recommend relegating this comic and the others like it to a nearby Batman-esque universe and not considering it official. That's what I did with all things stupid in Star Wars, and I'm much happier now.

Harley's award-winning Paul Dini origin has apparently been retconned away. Here's hoping DC decides this particular story happened elsewhere in their vast stable of Earths.

Anyone who has ever read The Popol Vuh knows this. The rabbit on the moon is one of the more memorable symbolic legends in that scripture.

I didn't know that was in the Popul Vuh.
I read a long time ago that instead of the "Man in the Moon" the Chinese see a bunny bent over a bowl of rice. Ever since, that's almost always what I see in the Moon. It's funny how expectations shape perceptions.
