I've got dry skin, but usually don't get chapped lips. The last few months though I've had really dry lips, and lately I'm having to moisten them every hour. I've been using shea butter, but since that doesn't seem to be doing it, I've just started using Burt's Bees chapstick, but that doesn't seem to do it either.
So looks like I'll be needing to try some other kinds. What's your fave?

Not Blistix Lip Infusion Moisture Splash. The Complete Moisture is the one in the dark blue tube. Not the silver tube. Really, don't get them mixed up.

What ketchupqueen said, especially if my lips are already dry.
If they are not, sometimes just my stick of pure cocoa butter, because it smells good and does the job of maintenance well when I am not already dry.

I have this Badger balm stuff my mom gets me from Cracker Barrel. It comes in all these stress-reducing, relaxing scent variations so I started putting in my lips before bed to help me fall asleep. And its loaded with olive oil and beeswax so it does great moisturizing while I sleep which is better than putting chapstick on all day.

I've found that when I get chronically dry lips, its usually because I'm not drinking enough water. Like some of the others here, I'd recommend blistix -- and I'd recommend drinking a couple of extra glasses of water everyday until the problem goes away.
Also I'm curious, does the couple of months correspond more or less to when you started heating your home for the winter? A heated house is often very dry even in a normal humid climate but it often doesn't occur to people that they might need to drink more when their indoors during the winter months.

*shrug* I have chronically dry lips all the time, winter, summer, no matter how much I drink and whether the heater/air conditioning is on. (It does get worse in winter, though.) It was a LITTLE better when I lived in a humid climate (or when I'm sick and spend hours a day in a room with a humidifier), but not much.
Of course, I'm also a nervous lip chewer/licker/ripper off of skin...

I drink plenty of water (probably a gallon a day) so that's not it. The air's drier now since it's winter, but our heating shouldn't be an issue -- we've got a wood furnace that heats the house with hot water radiators.
I might also try shaving off my beard for a bit, that's helped before when I've had dry/irritated skin on my face, maybe the dry skin on the rest of my face is sucking moisture out of my lips?

It's one of my favorite personal care items. I can carry it in my purse and use it for hands, lips, face, everything. Portable, lasts forever, smells yummy, and most importantly, it is a multi-tasking workhorse.

I believe I'm addicted to it. I've experimented with the various flavors it comes in, yet I prefer the plain old original kind. It's yummy and healing.
I used to use Carmex, until I found this baby.
Edited to add - I've broken out several times from their lotions and shea butters. I stay away from everything they have except this great lip healing goop and the liquid soap lines that they have.

CVS has this stuff called DCT- Daily Conditioning Treatment. It's SPF 20 and works WONDERS. Makes your lips tingle and seriously HEALS them. Works like a charm, seriously.

I use carmex and it is effective. However, it has a detrimental impact on my ability to play wind instruments. It has a topical aneasthetic (sp?) that, while weak, does cause some loss of sensation needed for optimal playing.
Many musicians use a product called DCT. It has great restorative properties without significant numbing potential.

I've been cooking up my own concoction. I brought it into work, and the folk I work with are clamoring for me to make them some, too.
1 ounce pure cocoa butter 2 ounces pure olive oil 1/4 tsp honey (optional: few drops of Vitamin E oil)
Melt the cocoa butter in the olive oil, stir in the honey and Vitamin E oil, pour into a plastic jar (it is too slippery for glass -- you'll drop it and make a mess) and let it firm up at room temperature. If it doesn't firm up after a day, put it in the fridge, and it will solidify and stay solid.
I rub it on my hands, elbows, cuticles, lips, feet (but put on socks after, or you'll slip on the tile floors). It melts at skin temperature, and goes on greasy, but miraculously absorbs into your skin after a minute, leaving no greasy residue. I can't imagine why. Also, it's tasty.
Or you could, you know, rub your lips with Crisco. No kidding. Also, you can rub it into your feet, knees and elbows. Really. I swear!

One thing I will say, as much as I love Carmex and think it's the best for healing sore, chapped lips, it does not contain a sunscreen. So if you're going to be out in the sun much, use one of the others with an SPF rating listed on it when you go out. Sunburned lips are the worst.
Dumb question for Tante Shvester: Where do you get pure cocoa butter? I think I might have to try your recipe.

Pure cocoa butter is available at all our local drug stores. Try the skin care section-- it comes in tubes, usually (the stuff in tubs has other stuff in it.) It'll be right next to the stretch mark and sunburn remedies, usually.

I've made lip balm too, but mine included bees wax and was much more like burts bees. If that isn't working, mine won't.

No kidding. I love that stuff.
For every day (I have very dry lips and they will chap if I don't put something on them.) I use Nutrogenea medicated balm. It's possible one of the medicos will tell me that's wrong, but I've been using it for years, starting when my lips were so dry and cracked I was bleeding all over the place. It works fantastically.
When they are very cracked and I need to be pretty fast, I use the Mary Kay stuff.
