I'm a fan of the Artemis Fowl books, I admit it. I have yet to read the fourth or fifth book, but I own copies of them.
So, I was delighted to have the opportunity to see the author, Eoin Colfer, speak at a recent book signing. Realizing the number of younger children in the audience, he passed on a reading from his new book and told anecdotes and answered questions.
I must say that the man was hilarious. He had a very dry, sarcastic, and witty sense of humor. He was quick on his feet. And he seemed to be quite the accomplished smart-aleck.
He was also very friendly and signed all of the books I brought with me.
So, if you are a fan, I would advise you to go see him speak if you have the chance.
Edit:
He made one particularly memorable comment regarding the soon to be released sixth Artemis Fowl book. He said that he toyed with a couple of titles before picking Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox.
The runner-up for the very important title of this book was Artemis Fowl and the Sorcerer's Secret Goblet of Azkaban. He said, of course, that he'd been planning to set the book partially in Phoenix, Arizona.

I love the Artemis Fowl books, and am amazed that he can keep coming up with stories when each story seem to end in finality. Yet, he does keep them coming.
I did have one small problem though, in the most recent book 'Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony' there is a line that roughly said '14 year old Artemis Fowl'. Really, 14, we are to believe that the previous four books only took two years? That seemed to me to be the author fudging the time line horribly and it spoiled the illusion to some extent.
None the less, we get a great adventure, as always a great mystery, and we get to travel to Taipei Taiwan which was nice. Further, we get to meet the usual compliment of oddball characters.
By the way, 'Half Moon Investigations' is also a pretty fun and funny book, and the 'Supernaturalist' is pretty good too.
In all cases, Eoin Colfer writes with just the right combination of oddball absurdity, and deep mystery and adventure. I look forward to the next installment of Artemis Fowl, even though the time line has lost a degree of credibility in my mind.

I've read the first three - that was all we could get our hands on - and enjoyed them immensely. Glad to hear he's a nice guy, too.

I love the Artemis Fowl books. LOVE. I went to a signing when The Opal Deception came out, and I ditto everything Steve has said. He was extremely nice and charming, and didn't blink an eye when I said I was getting the books signed for myself.
