My local library recently added a bunch of Little Lulu trades to their graphic novel collection.

I vaguely recall reading reprints of this as a kid. Looking at the trades, I marveled at how good these comics really are. Primary series artist-writer John Stanley didn't create the characters, but he did produce charming, often hysterical stories featuring kids who act like kids instead of little neurotic adults (ala Peanuts) or greeting cards (as in The Family Circus).

There's plenty of whimsy to be had, but not at the cost of reality. I was especially impressed by a story where Lulu meets a poor girl who's never been visited by Santa despite having exemplary behavior, has to cook meals for herself and her father, doesn't have a mother...shaking up Lulu's world view severely.

The following sequence where she decides to make the other girl's Christmas a little merrier is touching and truthful without being preachy, sickly-sweet, or maudlin.

Highly recommended for fans of classic comics, or just good comics, period.

I was kind've impressed by the orignal Pogo the first time I encountered it, myself.

I know my mother used to like Lulu, but I've never encountered it, myself. Maybe if those trades show up in my area (when I get back- not expecting to see them in NZ) I'll give them a look.
