TV Tropes, a wiki devoted to the tropes of popular fiction.

Very fun site, though like most wikis it has more to do with the opinions of the authors than any so-called 'neutral' information. [Wink]

Awesome. I fully blame you in advance for me not getting anything done this weekend.

My favorite entry regards super-heroes with powers so specialized that they're useless in most situations, as epitomized by Ma-Ti of Captain Planet. His power was the ill-defined ability of "Heart".

All the other Planeteers can control the very forces of nature itself in powerful, often visually impressive manners.

Ma-Ti? "He's Dr. Dolittle with a Spider-Sense." [ROFL]

Apparently, EG is an example of The Woobie:

quote:
woobie (named for a child's security blanket) is that character you want to give a big hug, wrap in a blanket and feed soup to when he suffers so very beautifully. Woobification of a character is a curious, audience-driven phenomenon, divorced almost entirely from the character's canonical morality, as witnessed by the woobification of Lex Luthor on Smallville.

Woobification can tie into a disturbing hurt/comfort dynamic, in which fans enjoy seeing the Woobie tortured, if only for the chance to wish the hurt away. This is often made manifest in the curious form of the Hurt Comfort Fic.

A properly executed Woobie inspires deep fannish devotion. A poorly executed Woobie earns scoffing and mockery, perhaps at the same time.

Here's another one that struck me- Flanderization...the process where what used to be a single aspect of a character's personality is exaggerated more and more until the character disappears within the now bloated, warped trait.

Named in honor of Ned Flanders, for obvious reasons.
