"Today, the market is increasingly dominated by one player, who is consolidating its dominance through acquisition," Microsoft said in a statement Friday. "Together, Microsoft and Yahoo can offer a credible alternative."

Between threads that start off with Bush declaring the constitution is unconstitutional and Microsoft being worried about the market being dominated by one business, I have realized I no longer need The Onion.

I guess they mean Google? Though for a second I thought they meant AOL.

I would be against this. I like having just my username in Yahoo, as opposed to Hotmail making me type my whole email address.

Yes, they mean Google. No one else is remotely big enough to even be considered for this kind of talk.

To be fair, that was a response to Google saying that MS and Yahoo should not join because it would stifle competition. MS was just pointing out that in the market that Google is talking about Google would still have a comfortable lead even AFTER the acquisition.

I have a gmail. I'm not sure how stopping using the other two would improve my life so much.

I find it amusing that Microsoft is referring to someone ELSE as "...consolidating its dominance through acquisition."

Microsoft stay away from Yahoo! I like my Yahoo Mail and you can never leave well enough alone! Tinker with my email and I'm leaving for gmail! You've been warned!

*HATES change, gave up hotmail because they wouldn't just leave it alone*

I read a rumor today that Google might make a counter offer for Yahoo. No real details though, but apparently Google is REALLY unhappy about this.

I read an article yesterday that said Google was bringing up anti-trust violations because of this deal.

Yahoo board to reject Microsoft bid ?
(full story HERE)

Apparently, $31 a share wasn't enough; they want $40.

The company I use to work for, Deneba, had a buyout offer from Microsoft. They said no, too.

Biggest mistake they ever made. Granted, it was nowhere near the magnitude of this deal, but still.

"*HATES change, gave up hotmail because they wouldn't just leave it alone*"

I always thought there was something wrong with me for being this way. I hated when hotmail changed their look.

The water-cooler opinion of a bunch of anti-trust lawyers is that Google could never get approval to buy Yahoo, but Microsoft might be able to.

Are you kidding? I can't STAND it. Yahoo recently changed their look, too, but left me an obvious and easy way to switch it back to the classic layout. I love them for that.

I hope the time between when I give up my college email and exchange it for my grad school email is exceedingly short.

I have a yahoo account I never use. Sigh.

Out of curiosity, what factors affect that opinion?

Essentially, the definition of the market (web-based search and advertising) and the percentage that the combined company would control. Microsoft+Yahoo is smaller than Google alone is in that market.

I think Tribble put it best when they said "two people with an IQ of 75 does not equal one with an IQ of 150."
