Last time I checked I owed 210 dollars. now I owe 870. How could that have happened? I don't have any money!

H and R block. I checked just now. How could it have jumped from 210 to 870? That eats up that whole check. I don't have that kind of money.

You can work out a payment plan with the IRS. As to how it jumped, I don't know your situation so I can't tell you. I don't even know what you mean by jumping, really.

It's called unemployment and not having withholdings because I can't afford to do that so I have to pay later and lose a nice 300 dollar refund. (

Huh? The tax rate for last year is the only one that applies... Unless you mean the preparers? You don't need someone to prepare your taxes if it's not a super-complicated situation.
Have you tried using the Tax Freedom program? You can use Turbo Tax and e-file free.

I just filed it, but i had to do so before it jumped from $210 to $870 for some reason I don't understand! AUGH!!!!!!!! I HATE MONEY BECAUSE I NEVER GET TO HAVE ANY!

See, I don't get that, it shouldn't "jump." Where are you seeing that it at one point is 210 and at one point is 870? Did you enter additional information, or delete it?

You didn't itemize, did you? It's almost impossible for a single, low-income person without a mortagage or extraordinary medical expenses to have enough itemized deductions to make it worth taking them instead of the standard.

But seriously, I would not mind doing any of those things within the next six months. That would be awesome. And getting a good job.
I tried to itemiz, but I do not think I have dirt which is why it got so high. It was a 300 dollar refund before the darn unemploymenet. : o( I haven't had a refund that large in ages. Shame Bernie is not a dependent.

Well. If you can't pay right now, you have two options. You can work out a payment plan (they generally apply a fee to this; since you're low income it will probably be a reduced fee, but that's still about $45, and they can dock it from your pay if you don't pay it every month), or you can file for an extension. If you file for an extension that will get you a 120 day grace period, but it will HAVE to be paid in full at the end of that time or penalties will be incurred. Of course, the economic stimulus payment is coming up; you will probably get $300 from that. So if you talk to the IRS they may agree to give you an extension and just deduct what you owe from your stimulus payment. Of course, you're filing kind of late in the year so your stimulus payment may not be processed in time for the 120 day deadline, which means more (probably all) of it would be taken-- fees, interest, etc., and depending how long before it came you could still owe more.
I highly recommend calling now and figuring out what you're going to do, because the longer you wait the more penalties and fees and interest add up. (Yes, they will charge interest on your debt-- even though they don't pay interest on what is withheld from people's paychecks. Nice, huh?) But be careful what you agree to. They have the power to pretty much ruin your life, trash your credit, and empty your bank account whenever they want if you don't pay them on their schedule. They will also sometimes try to push you into bad options. Make sure you ask about the fees and rates that apply to each option before you agree to any of them.

Shouldn't I get 600 dollars? I made enough for it. And why should they torment me like this? I don't have a job right now (except that part time stuff I did, and I'm not even sure how to report that.)

It is $300 minimum, provided you make atleast $3000. If you have a tax liability over $600, you can get up to $600 in refund (so the maximum). If you reread the article you linked, that is what it says.

Then you should probably be getting the full $600. My tax rate ended up being negative, so I will be getting $300 (but with hubby and baby also getting $300, it isn't too bad).

I doubt I'll be doing much fun stuff with mine. Paying for the new water heater plus the plumber (who says that the problem wasn't just that one pipe but something else in addition to that) and the new back door (I'll believe they are paying when the money has cleared my bank accoung) has wiped us out pretty badly (in one week, we accrued over $2000 in emergency home repair charges). My husband has also refused to do any more home repairs so my initial plans of fixing up the yard and the sink are out.
