My brother is questioning me about a book I can vaguely remember reading. I was hoping someone might recognize the plot.

Eath time the protagonist falls asleep he enters another world/dimension. He has to face three challenges - when he conquers the last challenge he moves on to some higher realm, and in the "real" world he dies.

Ideas?

I haven't read that book, and my brother says it isn't what he was talking about. It is very similar to what I described, however, so kudos there.

I think that my brother might be misremembering a short story as a novel - this sounds like something that I might have in a Gene Wolfe short story collection.

It sounds vaguely like the Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones

I just reread the first volume of the Chronicles of Chrestomanci, and it doesn't sound like either of those stories.

In "The Lives of Christopher Chant," if Christopher dies in the dream state, then something happens to take one of his lives when he wakes. But it doesn't follow a challenge met, on the way to a higher realm.

Did the main character use a whip as a weapon?

I vaguely remember something about a series about a gate that seems to remind me of your description.....I think is was a young adult bok I read years ago.

Hmm...
