It doesn't open until Christmas of 2009, but Disney's decided to activate the official site for their return to 2D full-length fairy tale musicals a little early.
The Princess and her Frog are cute but...the firefly. I'm not sure about that firefly...

I can't stand Randy Newman. I am insanely excited for the movie with the exception of having to listen to Newman's obnoxious voice almost the whole time.
I love Disney's Tarzan and Toy Story, again with the exception of the music. I can't stand listening to the same singer/songwriter for an entire film. I miss the music like we had in Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and most of the classic Disney animated films.

Syn, a casting list for the film early on in the production had names that certain opinion columnists and bloggers deemed "racist" and "stereotypical".
(This without even seeing the movie.)
In particular, the lead character's initial name ("Maddy") was deemed a potentially offensive name.
(To all the Maddy's and Madeleine's of the world: You offend the bloggers.)
Disney, not expecting the announcement of their return to 2D animated fairy tales -and- their first African American princess character to generate negative reaction and outcry instantly went into damage control mode. The casting list had character names from very early in production, they assured the media. No name was final. Maddy became "Tiana" and several other names were tweaked.
It was all very silly.

I was trying to come up with a joke to "support" its offensiveness, but I'm not even able to do that. I'm interested in hearing the answer. Oh, and I have a niece whose name is Madalina.

Yeah. See this blog post for information on 1) why Maddy is "offensive" ( ) and 2) why Tiana is an extremely unlikely name for the character but Maddy would actually have been historically accurate.

I'm trying to figure out how this movie is remotely based on the original fairy tale. For one thing, wasn't the princess originally the frog? Or are they adapting the Frog Prince? There are a lot of Frogs and a lot of Princes and Princesses in fairy tale-dom
Also, the blog post mentions that perhaps the title was changed because it was offensive to the French? What is wrong with people?

manji: At the risk of spoiling things, let's just say both the Princess and her Frog go through many changes.
(Though really, that's spoiling nothing at all.)
On another note, I'm glad that Anika Noni Rose has been cast. She can act and sing, so there won't be a jarring disconnect when the production numbers come up.
