Ah, the things you miss when your bike touring. A week ago, my husband and I returned to Münster Germany following a 10 day bicycle tour along the Mediterranean Coast from Montpellier France to Barcelona Spain.
When I return from 10 days of camping with very little news contact, I spend the next few weeks being surprised by the things I missed.
Like this little tidbit from the G8 summit.

hmm, i would think that after sitting on a tiny wedge for hours at a time for 10 days straight I would miss the feeling of comfortably walking/sitting/standing/anything.

Sigh. It was so good to see the footage from Senator Obama's speech in Germany. Foreign crowds waving American flags...that weren't on fire.

I have to admit, whether crowds of Germans wave American flags or burn them is very low on my own list of priorities. Don't get me wrong, I'm disgusted with Dubya on this latest gaffe (is it a gaffe if it's so intentional?), but the way Germany has conducted itself on Afghanistan (that more than anything else, to me) makes me say 'to hell with what they think about us'.

President Bush asks allies to help defend Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Allies, seeing how little appreciation their efforts are given by the US (as demonstrated by our duly elected leader) are even less inclined to help.
American soldiers must take on even more of the violent responsibility for fighting the Taliban and Al-Queada.
More US Soldiers are wounded and die.
I wonder, Mr. President, was that parting jab worth it?

Another way to put this (and more accurate, in my opinion, since Afghanistan and Iraq are certainly not just our problem) would be to say, 'The 'Allies', giving little help to begin with, after receiving little appreciation for it, are further inclined to not help very much.'
And before I get misunderstood and criticized, let me reiterate that I think it was a deeply stupid and unnecessary thing for Dubya to have done.
