...they were working just fine yesterday. I had MS Reader open, turned the volume on it all the way down.

Today, I'm not getting any sound at all, even though I made sure both speakers are plugged in, made sure the speakers are not set on mute, checked the system volume...nothing.

I scanned for viruses, made sure Windows XP had the latest updates...still can't get any sound. Unless they both suddenly went bust overnight due to an unknown factor, I have no idea what's wrong.

Can anyone offer help?

Thank you.

Have you restarted your computer? Do the speakers have their own power supply? Have you tried unplugging and plugging them back in? Tried reinstalling the audio drivers?

You can also try hooking up your speakers directly to an alternate sound source such as a CD player, mp3 player etc. Then you can isolate the problem to either the speakers or the computer.

That would be my first choice (after checking the power). The standard audio jack for a PC is the same for many devices, such as an iPod. If you get sound from the iPod but not the PC, it's a computer fault. If it's the other way around you need new speakers...

You could also try plugging headphones into the PC audio socket - this time you test the PC output instead of the speaker input, if you see what I mean.

Good luck, and I hope it's just a stupid thing, and nothing costly.

Sound is back. Apparently "SndVol32.exe" got deleted somehow. As I never mess with the hidden stuff if I can help it, I'm still puzzled as to what exactly caused its deletion.

I'm glad you got it working again.

How did you figure out that was the problem?

Googling my problem caused that to pop up as a possibility.
