I've spent some of this evening playing around with new Microsoft service called Photosynth. Its actually kind of interesting, the algorithm tries to recreate a 3D map of where your photos are in relation to each other and lets you zoom around the image.

The algorithm isn't half bad, I threw some (what I thought) were pretty tough jobs filled with similar looking trees and rocks and it actually did pretty well although there is one set where I thought it split one panorama into two because of what I think are a couple of boats in a different location.

Of course its Microsoft so it only works on PC (probably Windows too), but it is free. So if you have already have roughly a few dozen photos in scenic places I recommend giving it a whirl.

In the end, I think it will be much less useful than the simpler photo-tagging technology built into Google Earth and Picasa, that I've embraced, which automatically reads GPS tags from photos and displays them accordingly, but its still kinda fun.

My relatively modest attempts:

The two larger Huangshan mashes are the only ones that worked relatively decently, the Hangzhou one would except for those boats(?) which end up splitting the 3D mash into two groups.

Some amazing Synths done by National Geographic with hundreds of photos:
