Just got home from the Dave Matthews Band concert at Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit.
The first time I saw him was just after Everyday came out. It was a good concert. The second time was just last summer. It was a semi-okay almost bad concert.
This was the best concert I have ever seen of any artist, and I've been to a lot of concerts. Only Garth Brooks comes close to rivaling the level of incredible awesomeness that Dave reached tonight.
For anyone who loves Dave, you know what I'm talking about. For those that have yet to realize the splendor that is Dave, you need to see him live, you'll be hooked.

Well, this is one college girl who would let you have him. Someone even offered me free tickets to one of his concerts and I passed them along to my roommate.

I understand the urge to not like Dave just because so many people do like it. Reasons for liking him differ. I happen to think it's fantastic music. I disliked Harry Potter for a long time just because it was so overhyped.

Nah, don't care for his type of music. I was ruined anyway quite a few years ago. A "friend" of mine (we have since stopped being friends)tried to "culture" me. I didn't take well to that. Mainly because it is against my biggest belief of everything and anything. I will not tell you how to live as long as you don't tell me. She tried, I humored because she was one of my best friends at the time. The three cd's she gave me for my "culturing"...well they somehow found their way to a dumpster in CA.
And I'm gonna end this here because I have had enough to drink tonight that I barely know what it is that I am posting. peace.

At Endercon, my family hung out with this adorable teenage girl from Colorado who taught us the Dave Matthews dance. I'll always have a soft spot for Dave in her honor.

I love Dave Matthews and I have seen him several times although I don't enjoy big stadium type shows nearly as much as more intimate ones. I saw him many years ago as the opening act for Big Head Todd and the Monsters (I know many of you are saying, "Who?" Exactly!) and he blew me away. It was a little venue called The Backyard in Austin and it was just wonderful; one of the two best concerts I have ever seen. I saw him over a year later at Horde with Blues Traveler and didn't enjoy either show. I love listening to DMB really loud in my car all alone on my long commute to work.

I used to see Dave every summer for like 5 or 6 straight years. From 1995-2000 or so. I haven't seen him since then, and also haven't really listened to him much either. Partly it's that I don't really care for some of his new stuff and also my tastes have slightly moved away, but I still love throwing in a Dave cd once in while. Under the Table and Dreaming and [i]Crash[/] both get a decent amount of play, as well as a few live shows.
His live shows are the best, and I still pick up new live CDs when they come out.

I think "Everyday" is the best of his last four cds.
Busted Stuff really is busted stuff in many ways. Stand Up is okay. Some Devil is good too, but there's something missing. All of Everyday is awesome.

I'm temporarily reviving this thread, as I'm going to see him Tuesday night (for the second time in six months, not my fault, it just happens to be when he's here).
I've reevaluated a lot of my opinions of his music since the concert in December, and in general on my opinion of concerts. I still love Dave, don't get me wrong, it's fantastic music, but "Everyday" has lost some of it's luster as I've gotten to really enjoy his older stuff more. "Everyday" strikes me as a little too poppy, though still very enjoyable. Nothing'll ever be better than "Under the Table" or "Before These Crowded Streets."
On concerts, I saw Gomez live in Pontiac last month, and it was by far in my top three all time for best concerts. They were amazing. It was a small venue, an old church converted into a concert hall. Being fifteen feet away from an incredible group changes the dynamic in a way that seems obvious now, but couldn't have even been guessed at before I went. The concert, and the group, were amazing and moving in a way that words cannot do justice. I'll be spending the next couple months exploring their music as much as possible. I only wish I could see Dave in such a small venue, but I'll settle for Pine Knob (DTE Energy Music Theater).

I agree, Dave's older stuff is definitely better than the new stuff. Under the Table is by far my favorite. Although Two Step (Crash) was what first hooked me, my favorites are Halloween (Preferrably Live, the sloppier the better), Dancing Nancies, Crush, Ants Marching, and Minarets.
Pig is always good too when it's time to chill. Ooo and Jimmy thing. I'll stop now, before I just list all of his songs.

It's my experience that college guys like Dave Matthews more than college girls.
I've never been to a Dave show, but the world is a better plaCe for having him around. There is something subtle and cunning and truthful about his approach to music.

I haven't seen Dave live in over 5 years or so. But before that, I had seen him live every summer for 6 or 7 straight years, starting when I was a sophmore in high school. The first show was just around the time he released 'Under the Table and Dreaming'. I was hooked right then. I loved the music and his shows were always excellent.
I lost interest though with some of his new stuff. Just couldn't get into it. I still listen to some CDs now and again, but nothing released in the last 5 years. It's mostly Under the table, Crash, and then a few live shows, Red Rocks and the like.

There is something honest about his simple ballads. "Two Step" and "Where are You Going," are two simple and great songs. I don't think that Dave Matthews is in the same league as the Beatles, but I appreciate his simple songs in the same way I appreciate songs like Something, Jealous Guy, Blackbird.

I havent heard any other DMB songs that sound like that one (could be ignorance on my part) but its the only song of his that I enjoyed.

That concert was amazing. He played a few oldies that he hasn't played live in years. "Dreaming Tree" among them.
He also played three new songs, "Sister" (about his sister), "Kill the King" and "Idea of You."
"Sister" almost made the friend I was with cry it was amazing. It's an acoustic Dave solo, both like and unlike anything I've ever heard from him before. It's touching, and I think anyone here who has a sibling at all, or even a best friend would identify with this song. I have a .wma file of it I got from another Dave fan, so, if anyone is interested I'd love to send it out.
"Kill the King" and "Idea of You" sound like Dave has erased the last like five years of cd releases and he's taking straight off from Under the Table or Before These Crowded Streets. They're old school, but a progression, not a rehash. Both are great, though I like "Kill the King" best. Plus it was just awesome that be debuted "Kill the King" for the first time just for me .
I eagerly await his next CD.

Temporarily reviving this thread again, to the possible annoyance of so me. And it's to rant, which I apologize for ahead of time, since that's probably even more annoying.
My yearly DMB concert fast approaches (my tickets came via FedEx today and they are quite pretty, though last year's design was better), though I find myself without an accomplice this year. Last year the concert fell on my brother's birthday, so I took him. This year, like I always do, I simply bought two tickets and figured I'd find someone to go with me later on, but this year it's looking like that could be a harder task than I'd intended. My best friend is a big DMB fan, and more or less made it clear to me that she wouldn't go even if the ticket was free and I drove. This is annoying, as she is making the decision based on one concert we went to see a few years ago that was somewhat poor and refuses to change her mind, though she'd admitted that she likes any and all of the live music I send her of his.
I'm quickly approaching the point of grabbing anyone at hand to go to the concert just so I have someone to talk to. It's a week from Monday. Under different circumstances I'd just sell the extra ticket on stubhub and turn a tidy profit. I'm in row CC, which is pretty close, but the tickets are from the Warehouse, the official fan club, and if they catch you selling them online you get booted out, which I'd like to not have done since I'm finally getting decent seats.
I put up a sign at work offering the ticket up. There are plenty of people at work I could enjoy a night out with, especially to a DMB concert, so I hope there will be a taker. Otherwise I'll probably end up dragging someone along who doesn't really want to go, and that's no fun at all. I don't expect anyone to pay what the ticket actually cost, as they're expensive (for me anyway), but I guess it's just a sign of how strapped everyone is for cash.

To me, "hit on" has a sleazier feel to it than "flirted with," especially from a married person. Just curious.

My ex said that Carter actually invited her to dance in one of their videos. She goes to see a lot of local bands in the Charlottesville and Harrisonburg areas, so she may be telling the truth. That girl was cute, but there was no way I was going to keep driving 3 hours one way to see her, and I'm not about to move there, all my family/friends are here in NC.

Dave Matthews is greatness, but it's Carter who's god.

My dad took me to see Return to Forever this weekend, though.
Stanley Clarke has completely rewritten all the Holy Books of Music. His (acoustic) bass solo was the single most powerful, moving, and technically astounding performance by any person on any instrument (including their own voice), ever, in the history of people.

LeRoi, the band's saxophonist and one of the founding members of the band alongside Carter and Dave was injured a month and a half ago in an ATV accident and was expected to return to the band. He died suddenly and unexpectedly from complications from the accident.
The saxophonist from Bela Fleck and the Fleckstones has been guesting with the band for the remainder of the Summer tour, and will continue to do so. No word yet on who will be the permanant replacement.
I'm shocked. Seriously. I just saw him play two months ago and he was amazing, as all of them always are. The band just won't be the same without him. I hope his family, and the band, are doing okay.

He was one heck of a sax player. I went to a Dave concert a few years ago, and it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. It was a blast.
My college roommate got me hooked on him back in '98. I have not followed them as closely in the last couple of years, but I still do love listening to their music.
