I've recently begun rereading The Hobbit. For all the stuff I remembered in the first chapter (the Dwarf songs, Bilbo's Tookish side waking up, Gandalf's magical smoke rings) there was a lot of stuff I've forgotten. While the references to a "fairy" in Took bloodlines can be explained as a reference to the Maiar as seen through Hobbit folklore, I was taken aback by Bilbo's boast that he'd fight the Were Worms of the Last Desert, if necessary.

"Worm" usually refers to a dragon in Tolkien's writings, but I don't recall any references to Were-Dragons in any of his other works. Was this reference ever explained?

My mind read the title of this thread as, "We are the last dessert of worms." I was fully expecting a morbid movie trailer. I need to get better sleep.
